I really like this song. That's what kills me.

This is Tom Morello. If that name doesn't sound familiar, his guitar work should be. Rage Against the Machine. Audioslave.

Here's a picture of him.

Isn't that the most darling Mao cap you've ever seen? And there's a hammer and sickle emblem. Precious. Do you really think Morello supports a defunct ( Read more... )

As long as he was considered "good for the Revolution", afterwhich he would be quietly dispatched.

I had the same thought!

I want to give Hoffman more credit, but I'm not sure that would be accurate.

He was in Audioslave with CHRIS CORNELL, did you know that?!?!

I think he was picked on in middle school. Unlike, you know, everyone else.

That's the good thing about Tom Morello. Ordinarily I go out of my way to pay for music, because I believe in supporting the artist with my dollars as best I can. But I just go ahead and steal Tom's (or more specifically, Rage's) stuff. :) I can't believe they ever thought they could write a bunch of angry songs that appealed to teenagers and actually expect it would make a dent in the world. "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" is a teenage anthem, not a revolution-starter.

The sad thing is, when you get him talking about non-political stuff, he is actually a really super enthusiastic, fun guy. Where did it all go wrong?

The original post title was, 'Whatever gets the kids to buy your song, eh, Tom?' Because that's what I think this is, SEO for teens, rather than a heartfelt expression of belief.

Great guitarist, but he's as deep as a koi pond.

The band didn't intend it the way teenagers typically intend it, even though many teens took it that way. It's an anti-govt song.

I don't know that they expected to change the world through music so much as, that's what's on their mind.

I never agreed with their message, but it's fairly easy to project my own anti-authority feelings on to it and ignore the band's purposes.

Oh, I know what Rage thinks the song is about. I'm just amused that they really believed that this kind of music (given the type of person it seems to attract), especially with a line like that, would really get people thinking. It's been my impression that people look for things they can relate to in music, so anything about rebelling against authority is going to appeal to a teenager dealing with bossy parents and teachers.
