Welcome to the Pharmacy, shall I wipe your nose for you?

So today I ran up against perhaps my biggest single pet peeve of human behavior at work. Well, at least in regards to work. Picking my biggest pet peeve of all, well it's like picking your favorite tree from a forest. I have so many...

The one in question though, has to do with the expectation of care. I don't mean the expectation of prompt, accurate service when prescriptions are being filled, this is standard. It should be standard. As a customer you should have an expectation of accuracy and as much speed as is possible, courtesy, privacy, and respect. (More on the speed issue later... I can rant about the expectations of that and will.)

What you should NOT expect is the freedom to abdicate all personal responsibility. If a prescription has no refills, if a prescription has lapsed and is expired, or if you have run out of medicine...

IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PHARMACY TO PREVENT THESE, IT IS YOURS!

This issue rears it's damn head usually every day, some indignant patient decides to scream or whine or cry (it happens a lot, and it never helps) because the prescription they have, with the information printed on the damn bottle, has either expired, run out of refills, or they've just run out of pills, it's now 7:30 PM on a Friday or any damn time on a Sunday, and they expect me to psychically contact their f'ing doctor for refills or just hand them over some free medicine.

Why? Because I'm a health care provider, they CLEARLY need help, and I should just give it to them without thinking that these functionally useless adults could have actually prevented this with 30 seconds of effort.

Oh... and if you need your prescription 30 mins before you leave to go on a trip, and the prescription form you just handed me is a month old.... fuck you...

(And I wouldn't post this if this kind of nonsense happened once a month or once a week, but when it happens seven to thirty times a day, especially on a weekend or a holiday, it's really just sad.)
