The fact that the question below was never addressed in my pharmacy school will forever fill me with consternation.
A patient came into my pharmacy today with a question that ranks up as the #1 all time greatest questions asked in my pharmacy career.
A bit of background. Estrace is a vaginal hormone replacement therapy for women. It's a cream that is applied internally in the vaginal canal and absorbs through the skin there. It's a vaginal estrogen used generally for menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness, but sometimes other hormone replacement uses.
And inquisitive and conscientious woman asked.... "How long after using Estrace vaginal cream should my boyfriend wait before giving me oral sex?"
After a brief flicker of stun, I tried to hide well and my years as an internet denizen helped get over such shock quickly, I realized... I had no answer. There is no information on that in the package insert and my schooling fell short of covering this. It sounds silly at first, but it's a very valid question. It'd be a bad idea to dose her boyfriend up with estrogen unless she was looking to switch teams but not switch partners.
I gave her what advice I could, basically just to wait until after the... happy event... before applying it for the night. But... wow...
