Military conscription is on the agenda in the rich world
The point of conflict is widespread. Military conscription is starting to be looked at again. However, it is not easy to attract young people to join in defending the country.
The policy of conscription is being widely discussed again in Europe. Perhaps this is because the possibility of Ukrainian defeat looms large in the face of a Russian invasion. Or it could be because of the threat of the United States leaving the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) if Donald Trump is re-elected as US president.
Germany has invited its neighboring countries in Europe to prepare for war by recruiting more troops through mandatory military service. The UK has also echoed this sentiment, but prefers to use the term "citizen soldiers" instead of mandatory military service.
The Economist magazine, April 18 2024, stated that conscription in the armed forces can be carried out in the form of conscription for civilians of all ages, conscription through lottery system, or the standard period of military service for young people after graduating from high school. Not all countries practice mandatory military service because they don't get public support or don't feel they need it.
