[Drabble] Scary stories
Title: Scary Stories
Pairing: Technically gen, but Maru and Hina acting like an old married couple XD

Notes: Another calendar drabble! This one was for this pic. XD I feel like there could've been many alternative scenarios too, haha.
“…And just as I was about to get up, and go and open the window to see what was out there, there was this sound, right beside me, like a swooshing sound - like heavy fabric dragging across the tatami, or -”
“No it didn’t!” Hina interrupts. “It was more like someone running a shower in the room next door…”
Maru looks at him resentfully. “I was going to say, or gushing water, like in a garden stream -”
Hina laughs. “How can those two things sound the same?!”
Maru pouts. “You’re ruining my scary story!”
Hina laughs more. “Next time, better pick one about a time I wasn’t there.”
“Yeah, you ruin everything just by being there,” Yoko puts in. The smack Hina tries to give him is robbed of its power because the way he’s leaning on his elbow, he can’t really reach Yoko’s head properly.
“I think you should go back to telling the story about the okama and the wine bottle,” Subaru says in a voice that already sounds half-asleep, as if he’s asking for a soothing bedtime nursery rhyme.
“No, we didn’t want anyone to have nightmares, did we?” Yasu reminds him as Ohkura shifts slightly in the direction of the door. “That’s why we suggested a ghost story instead…” he adds, faltering.
“This one wasn’t scaring anyone,” says Ryo, a touch of relief in his voice.
“It would’ve been scarier if you’d let me tell it properly!” Maru protests.
“No, it wouldn’t,” Hina says dismissively, starting to shift around like he’s decided it’s lights-out time for the class now.
Maru keeps pouting, but he decides not to point out to everyone that maybe the reason Hina was so determined to sabotage his story is because Maru remembers the look on his face when he asked him, in a whisper, “What’s that noise?” at 3am, that night they stayed in an inn in Kagoshima very similar to the one they’re in now. He’ll save that story for a time he really needs it.
