Cats and Parrots?

I am very interested in getting a parrot, but I am trying to get informed before taking such a big step. I've been reading up on care, feeding, training, the different species of parrot, where the nearest parrot resues, breeders, etc. are, but I have a question I haven't seen an answer to ( Read more... )

I'd add that the attitude of this community is more hand-holding while that one is more tough love. Both can have their place.

bloolark also wrote this piece on living with multiple animals in a house. She's got some ridiculous number of pets, something like 7 parrots, multiple cats, and housemates with lizards, and they haven't killed each other, so she's got to be doing *something* right.

Eight parrots, 5 cats, 3 dogs, a rabbit...and some reptiles I don't keep track of. :D What an amazing household!

Hi there! It is definitely possible to keep parrots and cats in the same household, but, as razorbagel mentioned, there are a lot of factors that play into it ( ... )

And the flip side of this is that my cats are all three ferocious hunters with humongous prey drives, and my lovebird has no fear at all, so there is absolutely zero interaction between them, and the bird is not out of her cage when the cats are not locked away. It just depends on your cat(s), and your bird(s).

Exactly! It's possible, if you're willing to do what it takes. In some cases, that is ensuring ZERO possibility of contact between cats and birds. (Ditto with dogs and rats.)

I have two birds and a cat, and my roommate also has a cat. My cat has little interest in the birds at all, but I had my cockatiel before I got the kitten and he learned very early that birds are off-limits. He's actually scared if the birds get too close to him. I trust him in the room when my birds are out of their cages.

Roomie's cat, on the other hand, is not trusted in the same room when my birds are uncaged. While she's lazy and a terrible "hunter," she just shows too much interest in them. Combined with their total fearlessness about cats, it's just too much risk for me. I also keep my cockatiel's wings clipped because when he's flighted he takes every opportunity possible to fly to and harrass my cat.
