Our budgie Winter has been giving us quite the scare for the past few months, and today's vet visit left me with more questions than I started off with. So I figured I'd post here and get your thoughts.
Thank you! I remember reading about what happened with your ex. :( Bah. That sucked.
I don't know if you remember since it was so long ago but, do you remember how your vet decided it was the liver? Did they feel an enlarged liver, did they run a test, was there some other clue? My vet seems confident that overgrown beak/nails, bruising, and cysts could be liver or thyroid, so I'm looking for clues that could be specific to just one of those. He's had weight gain and he's been lethargic, but she thinks that could be either one also.
Winter slept all day yesterday and he's been sleeping most of today. Because of this, I'm going to cancel the appointment for his second opinion. I don't feel like he's ready for another hour (or more) drive each way so soon. But I figure that when his beak gets overgrown again, we can take him to the other vet. It only took 3 weeks for his beak to get overgrown last time, so figure that'd mean we'd get the second opinion around 2-3 weeks from now.
I've decided to go ahead with the thyroxine because the vet tech I talked to at the clinic seemed confident that he can be taken off of it at any time - it's only permanent if his thyroid needs it permanently (either I had misunderstood that or it hadn't been explained clearly at first). She also seemed confident that it won't do any harm to him if it's liver. I hate seeing him suffer like this, so I figure I'll go on her word and give it a try.
In the meantime, since the vet has the thyroid possibility covered, I'll assume it's his liver and do my part there. I've been incredibly sleep deprived since this hit on Tuesday so I'm giving myself the day off, and then I'll work on researching and buying stuff tomorrow. Your ex mentioned milk thistle - I've seen that suggested before, but the suggested dosage (and method of giving it to him) differs depending on where I read it. What did you end up doing with it?
