Moving with a bird

Okay, it occurs to me that I have had psychotic luck moving with birds, and that in the next few months, there's a very real chance I could be moving to a different state (yet again). This time, I would really like to be adequately prepared.

The question is thus: What is your checklist of safety items to moving in a car and/or on a plane? We would ( Read more... )

There are some states where some species of parrots are illegal and can be seized and euthanized on the spot. Cockatiels are not one of those species thankfully (Quakers/monk parakeets are the main one), but there's an off chance that some police officer might know of the law and mistake a cockatiel for a Quaker, so make sure the health certificate lists species name.

That... is kind of terrifying. O_o I will totally make sure it lists species name, since one of the possible states is California, and my guess is that if anyone has laws about stock and plants, it's them.

One more thing I would add is a spray bottle. I'm not sure what the weather's gonna be like or your situation, but when I drove across the US with my birdy, it was a lifesaver. Sometimes we stopped and it got really hot really quickly, and I was able to spray her down to keep her cool. The vet also recommended not keeping the carrier in the front seat in case of an accident... and I'm sure you know not to have the bird out while you're driving. Good luck with your move!

A spray bottle! How did I miss this? The last several moves have been freakishly cool considering it was late spring, but this is an awesome addition.

Unfortunately with how I'd probably be moving, it's safer to have her in the front seat with her traveling cage strapped down and almost nothing else in the front seat than in the backseat in the middle. I usually have to move with everything I own in the car and possibly a trailer, so the idea of shifting items in the back with Nemo is terrifying.

Yeah, she stays firmly in the carrier while the car is in motion. I've seen what car accidents can do to humans, and I don't want to put her at more risk than being in a car already is. I do have one picture of her sitting on my steering wheel, but the car's turned off and we're in a rest stop. She was just being cute.
