Hi! I just recently found this marvelous comm a few days ago and have been avidly reading everything I can, especially the cockatiel posts. <3
( Read more... )
Wa ha! A question I can answer! For bar spacing for 'tiels the rule of thumb is that if you can get your finger in past the second knuckle the bar spacing is too big.
I personally house my two girls in an EFC (shorthand for everybody's favorite cage) from Windy City Parrot. It refers to the flight cage from either HQ or AE. They are practically the same cage. It seems to be what most people with small birds on the comm prefer. I haven't been looking at new cages lately.... I swear.... Anyway, I got these links from other people on the comm. They're really great. Enjoy!
I was in the same boat a couple of months ago. We were considering adopting a Pionus in the next couple of years and I didn't have the foggiest clue of what kind of cage I needed. Most of those links were provided for me due to a post asking about that.
Hey, do you have a thermo-perch for your beebs yet? Mine absolutely adore theirs! Its on WCP too under either bedtime or bath time I think.... I personally think their great for winter.
What on earth is a thermo-perch? (Aside from Nemo's version which is my shoulder. Perse'd prefer to suffer the chill than touch The Human. Then again, that's the same bird that verbally abuses her perch for being a perch.)
I am fairly certain I'm not the only one with one (or two....) Also, do you have a recipe for birdy mush? There are lots of posts in the comm archives about mush. Very much worth looking into.
I have that bookmarked in my favourites now. It will be so useful!
Perse is the least adventurous birdy eater I've ever met, though at least she hates seeds, and Nemo requires me to eat it first to show her it's not poison. Unfortunately most anything green is a great toy and not so great food... And if it doesn't have a crunch and a mess, she's not interested.
My beebs were exactly the same way until about 6 months ago when warm mush became breakfast. Someone may step in and correct me if its bad advice but what I did was start feeding it for breakfast. That is ALL they would get for a couple of hours. Then I would put pellets back in the cage. (There is concern about leaving birdy mush in the cage for more than an hour or two because of bacteria.) After about a week they started picking at it. After a month they started grudgingly eating it. Now I put it down and they (usually) immediately crawl down to nom on it. All is good with organic birdy mush now, although they despised the last batch because I put beets in it. O_o
Unfortunately with my current schedule (all over the place, and no one else has the animal inclination to help with a steady breakfast time), I'm sort of at a loss for that. I totally understand the idea behind it, but I'm not sure how to make a schedule for them when I don't really have a set schedule at all. Some nights I don't get back until 11, and other days I'm out the door by 7 and home early. Retail's a pain for this sort of thing.
Would it work maybe if when I came home I swapped it out? Usually they wake up for a few hours to snack and chill with me before we all crash again. Same idea, different time of day?
That would probably work in MY opinion (I do something similar) but you could always post it as its own question on the forum. Someone else might have a better idea for food scheduling than me. Everyone seems to work in so many different fields someone else is bound to have figured it out. ;)
*lol* As an aside its ironic that right before I posted my last reply I put out some noodles for the beebs and they dove into them like they were starving even though they have had access to pellets for hours. So much for being afraid of anything I put in front of them. Welcome to the comm btw. Feel free to e-mail me off the board if you want. We can swap 'teil stories. :D meka_of_yume@hotmail.com
