The first time your mum leaves leaves you alone in the house with Clyde, she promises only to be gone a few hours. When she rings and says it's going to be longer, you promise you'll go to Clyde's house to spend the night. You don't, not really. Well, technically you do so it's not really like you're lying to her. At least not the way Clyde explains it. Which means when she calls you the next morning to come pick you up, you're actually at Clyde's. Even though you'd spent the night watching movies on Mr. Smith.
The second time it happens she's actually just gone for a few hours and she comes back right away and you haven't got time to do anything more than play a few video games on Mr. Smith. But the third time it happens, your mum drives you to Clyde's house and you have this whole sleepover thing, which you understand, but you like pretending you don't know. Just cause it winds Clyde up.
Then there's that whole thing with his dad and Maria and her dad finding your mum and having her save the day, even though it was really Clyde who did it. After that, you don't know if your mum'll let you stay over again. You don't get to find out, because Clyde's mum's gone out of town and he's staying the night at your house. You don't talk about sleepovers, even though you want to make him roll his eyes at you and laugh. But you do invite Rani over for pizza and watch movies until it's practically past your bedtime.
When she leaves, you and Clyde spread out the sleeping bags on the floor of your bedroom and sleep that way. When your mum wakes you up for breakfast, she laughs and suggests next time using the bed. You go all wide-eyed and then Clyde smacks you. You on the bed, Clyde on the floor, or the guest room. But the next time, Clyde falls asleep on your bed when you're both supposed to be reading a book for school.
You finish and you think about pushing him off onto the floor. Or maybe getting out of bed and sleeping on the floor, but you don't do either. Not really because you're worried you'll wake Clyde, though you are, but mostly because you're a bit confused by the fact that you kind of like it. The next morning, Clyde gives you a funny look and you give him one back and tell him you didn't want to wake him up.
When you go over to his house, the same thing happens, only this time it's you on Clyde's bed and you really should get off. When you go to move, though, he wakes up and gives you a look. You don't know what to think, but you don't get off the bed and you fall asleep, back pressed up against Clyde's side. You wake up with Clyde's arm thrown over your chest and you know he's still asleep. You think about moving it, about getting up so he won't find you like this, but you're not fast enough.
Clyde looks at you, a long hard look and you feel yourself flush, though you're not sure why. He looks at you harder, as if he's trying to figure things out and, looking back, you can pinpoint the exact moment when everything changed. You see the light switch flip on in Clyde's head and then he kisses you.
He's not your first kiss, not your first real one. There was a disaster with a girl at school you'd rather not think about. But then there's Clyde, kissing you and you push him away. He looks upset and you know you did something wrong, so you grab the front of his shirt and tug at him. He won't kiss you again and you frown at him. He turns, rolling onto his back and staring at the ceiling.
"Clyde?" You ask, tentatively.
There's a moment of silence, then "yeah?"
"Tell me about boys." You think about Jen and when you made Clyde tell you about girls and making out and it almost makes you smile. You squeeze your eyes shut, suddenly afraid of what you've just asked.
You feel Clyde move and when you open your eyes again, he's looking down at you.
"They're kind of like girls," he starts slowly, "but less complicated."
And this is when you know you ought to kiss him again. So you do.
