Here it is. The big finale. The very last chapter of Caro. Whew! What a ride it's been. I don't know about you, but I've had a great time posting this ( Read more... )

I liked it, and if I had any friends who were sufficiently interested in R&J, I would tell them. =D I love the ending - I think it's really wonderful - and it was a nice end to an afternoon of wrestling with my failing external hard drive.

I like that Valentine is the one to bury them, that Mercutio is the one who looks after him at the beginning, and Valentine is the one looking after Mercutio later. I think even though it's a story from Benvolio's perspective that it's really more about Mercutio in so many ways.

(but what about Eliezer and Sarah????)

Thank you! And thank you for sticking with the story. I've enjoyed every one of your comments and the discussions we've had.

It did seem only fitting to me that the boys should end their days still looking after each other. They've been through so much, and they've all taken their turns at being the looker-after-er and the looked-after. Valentine is about fifty-five here, probably a widower himself, given how short women's lifespans tended to be. Throughout his entire life, I think that Mercutio and Benvolio were two of his closest companions, and this is the last grace that he can give them.

I think even though it's a story from Benvolio's perspective that it's really more about Mercutio in so many ways.

You're right. It did turn out like that. I had tried to keep the focus as much on both of them as possible, but Mercutio's story does tend to dominate. I think that's because Benvolio adds his own focus to Mercutio's story. The reader looks where Benvolio is looking.

Agh, I'm about to cry. Loooved this so much. I don't have any questions at the moment, I'm just trying to get over the fact that it's done and I won't have anymore amazing B/M fic left to read because no one writes fic about Shakespeare. :\ This was so lovely. Thanks so much for sharing. <3

Thank you for reading, and for writing such lovely, honest reviews!

I don't know what I'll write next. I've started to read The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and I have the school term to finish up (yay tenth week!) and then some surgery over Spring Break, but who knows? Out of all that, one might find a side story or two emerging. . .

I read this a day ago, and was so teary, I counldn't think of anything to comment! Such a lovely ending. I really enjoyed the ending, even though it was a bit sad to think of poor Benvolio being alone after all he gave to Mercutio, but I thought his death was dealt with in such a touching way.

I'm so sad it's over! I guess my only question, as an obvious procastinating writer(jeesh, it's been so long!), how long did it take you to finish it?

Thank you so much for enjoying this story as much as you have. Right from the beginning. I've enjoyed all your comments.

It is kind of sad to think of Benvolio alone. But on the bright side, in this story, he gets forty more years with Mercutio than he would have gotten in Romeo and Juliet. He had all the memories of what was for that time a long lifespan, and he had the foundling home to take him in for his last years. I think, all things considered, he had a good life ( ... )

I'd be up for either a prequel or side stories... or both!

I'm such a sucker for Romeo and Juliet fic, and there's a limited amount of quality out there. I find FanFiction.net to be very hit or miss. There's only so many 750 word "journal" entries I can take! :)

Well, I'll see what I can come up with. I think I'll give it a rest for at least a few weeks, though. I have to finish the quarter and have surgery, after all.

More miss than hit, I'd say. And at least half of them claim to be writing for their English classes. Seeing what they churn out makes me want to write another installment for my English class . . .

I stayed up all last night reading this and today when I finished it I found myself sobbing and wondering "How will Ferrucio bring him his water" And though it is embaressing to say, I am still crying even now.

All night? Wow. I'm impressed. Thank you so much for reading this. I'm glad you enjoyed it. (At least, I'm assuming that "still crying even now" means you enjoyed it.)

I stumbled onto this while wandering through old entries on several different communities - one leads to another, you know how it is - and just spent... wow, the last three hours reading this from start to finish.

I adored your characterization of, well, everyone, and am making plans to track down a copy of the movie version you keep referencing and point my friends in this direction. This was lovely in all the right ways - oh, especially the treatment of Mercutio's abuse and his slow healing, which strikes a particular chord with me.

... and I would be more coherent except it's two in the morning and I have work in seven hours oh god.

Thank you so much! What a lovely message to wake up to in the morning. I hope you get to work okay . . .

The movie version is probably the best-known one out there, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it. But just in case, the whole thing is available on YouTube here. It's quite an amazing movie. Very well thought out, with some interesting performance choices from everyone involved. One thing that struck me especially was the subtle modern sensibility underlying the period costume drama, and I've tried to keep a little of that here.

I'm so glad to hear you say that. For the longest time while I was writing this, I felt a little like Don Quixote or something, taking on the issue that's responsible for more bad fanfiction than any other. But I'm glad that my efforts seem to have paid off in the end.
