Lies Mothers tell Daughters: #1, independence
When he met me,
he smiled
his eyes lighting up.He looked so beautiful-just the sight of it
made me return the grin.i said to myself- i said -this is the smile
i could come home to every night, wake up
to every morning. this is the smile i would
work for - our breaths heaving together -
our skins pressed - (not)(quite)(close)(enough) -
against one anothers. this is thesmile out children will wear, and this
is the smile that i will die - old and
wrinkled and toothless and grey - with.
This Is That Smile.
But then he tossed his hair from his face
and my grin turned into a smirk as
i laughed at myself and my silly notions.
why not just take him home for a bit?
that's all they're good for anyway.
