I'm pretty lucky that my boss/committee chair is very laid back. He's just happy when progress is made and data generated.

Now, right now, one of the post docs in my lab has been getting all passive aggressive because I'm not doing enough work to make her happy. The fact that (a) I'm writing my proposal right now and actually ahead of schedule, (b) I can't access the bugs I need to do my experiments because our university admin is in shambles, (c) the reagents and cell lines I need are on backorder so I'm just waiting and waiting and waiting, do not play into her reasoning. She firmly believes I'm lazy because I'm at my desk all day and not at the bench. Oh and anyone who arrives after 9 am is lazy, regardless of what time they leave (I'm usually here until 8 pm). She'll probably give birth to livestock when I take time off to take my prelims - and I don't even work with/for her.

We see a lot of this in grad school and it's really annoying that people judge our work process based on their own irrelevent workaholism. The irritating part is that it's not the boss who's unhappy and making life difficult.

I've been giving snotty responses to passive-aggressive comments lately. I'd say something like, "Well, how about you read all these articles I'll need to know for my defense, and I'll stand at the bench and wish the supplies I need into existence." I've also been saying "Just deal with it" to people who were upset that I wasn't doing their work for them.
