It was, Edward thought with slight irritation, entirely too quiet in this place. He'd woken up after his 'nap' to find Al dozing on the bed next to him. In Germany, there had been the sound of loud automobile motors and horns, and in Central it had been the march of military-issue boots and the static crack of rifles as Hawkeye drilled the new recruits in target practice. And even in Risembool, steady hammering marked Winry and Pinako working on their latest piece of automail.
Here, there was no sound which intruded on the all-white room. Ed turned his head to regard Al, brushing a lock of blonde hair -- a shade darker than his own -- away from the younger one's face. "Hey. Al."
Al shifted lightly in his sleep. A soft "Brother..." fell from his lips as Ed tried to rouse him. "Nnng..." His hand reach out to his brother instinctively.
Ed smiled. "Hey, sleepy. You're always the one up early, what's wrong with this picture?" He shifted so his flesh hand was freed and let it rest against Al's searching one.
The younger stirred again, and grasped Ed's hand. Al's eyes blinked sleepily, and he looked up at his brother. "Nnng, Brother, I was comfortable."
"I know," Ed answered. "But if I let us sleep all day, we'll be up all night... and I don't think this place has much of a nightlife. Besides, we were going to pick up our training today, remember?"
Al pushed himself upward, and rubbed his eyes. "I know, Brother. It's probably the lack of practice that's making me lethargic. I just need to get a work out, that's all!" He smiled at Ed, and then stretched. Al's black shirt rose as he stretched and he shivered as the air met his skin.
"Cold?" Ed teased.
Scrunching his nose, Al made a face. "It's warm when I'm sleeping next to you. The air here is drafty!"
The older alchemist laughed. "You can't sleep all day, though. I wonder if we should tell someone that you don't need your room anymore, though. It's not like we've seen anyone in charge. It's just a whole bunch of people wandering around."
He climbed off the bed and took down his and Al's red coats, and offered his brother's to him. "Well?"
Al shrugged. "Maybe they'll just figure it out, after a while?" He stood and stepped towards his brother. Taking his coat from Ed, Al put it on. "This'll be our first time out of the castle! I wonder what it'll be like!" he said cheerfully.
"Less white, hopefully," Ed complained, looking around the room before heading for the door. "I feel like that damn colonel had me committed. If you weren't here, I'd be tempted to think this was a hallucination."
"Maybe we could paint the walls?" Al chipped in. He set a gentle hand on Ed's shoulder, and smiled.
"I didn't really plan on staying that long, Al," Ed muttered, but grinned at his brother. "Besides, shouldn't you be thinking on how you're going to try and beat me at sparring?"
"Well, Brother, I think I'll beat you the same way I always do!" He laughed, and ducked the swing his brother aimed.
Ed snorted. "Hey, didn't Mara say she wanted to come too? I'd say we knock on her door, but I don't know which one in this huge place is hers. Maybe she's just going to show up. Let's go outside, I've had enough of this castle for now."
"Ok!" Al chirped, following close behind his brother.
There were indeed large open areas surrounding the castle, and Ed chose one at random because of it's relative flatness. "This looks pretty good," he said, shedding his coat again -- it was surprisingly warm in the sunshine.
Al mimicked his brother, and grinned, looking around him. "It's so pretty here!"
"You think anywhere with green grass is pretty!"
"You should feel it, though! It's really nice! Soft, yet tickly at the same time..." Al's lips lighted in a soft, gentle smile. He remembered the first time he could feel grass on his skin after gaining his body back.
Ed just shook his head fondly. "Yeah, I know," he answered. "Now let's get going. If Teacher saw you cooing over the grass, she'd knock us both upside the head!"
Al laughed again, and took a fighting stance. "All right, Brother. Let's see how lazy you've gotten!"
"AL!"
