[Using the journal to ask.]

How do you see the position of President? As in, what does it mean to you?

... Kain Highwind.

[ooc: this okay? D:]

I believe that the position of president is to represent the people of America - not to control the government, but, rather, to act as a guiding hand on the ship of state, unifying and solidifying the public opinion in order to improve the quality of life for all citizens.

[politely waits for Harold to finish]

It's a good question Kain, and I'm glad the basics are getting touched on, because it's more than just a word or a job, as the castle seemed so quickly to label it as such. It's a role within the society that has been chosen by the people that make up that community. It's a way to let the voices of all those people be heard and for someone to listen to those needs and say just how it can be changed, to ensure the best choice is being made. [a pause to collect his thoughts]

The position isn't one that determines what is wrong or what is right for everyone, so often it's seen as this one sided view. To me it's the last voice to speak, and the first to act on what everyone else has expressed a concern for.

Um, hey. I'm Yuffie Kisaragi.

Do either of ya intend to force your rule on us when we get back to the castle? Just wonderin'.

Of course not. Paradisa has no established form of government, and, despite what some detractors may say, I am not a tyrant. I believe in democracy and the will of the people. Should the people decide to enact a democratic form of government, then I would certainly consider accepting a nomination for the position of President.

[agrees with Saxon on this one here... and again is patient and waits for his reply to be over]

Harold is right, [slight laugh] right now we're unsure of what will happen next, how long this sort of situation is going to last, but the castle chose our careers for us. It specified that we were to do this, and given that everything around us seems to be aligned to it, I wasn't going to just sit back and not act. I'm a man of action, and if this is the path I'm to take, then I'm going to do it to the best of my abilities.

That being said though, this is a unique situation, and one that I don't expect to carry over to the castle when the time comes for us to return. I'll look forward to knowing all of you though, through your questions and current concerns, and I hope that relationship will carry over back at the castle.

[Is there in person having been brought in by his two bodyguards. The little boy in the cow suit, complete with little horns, goes up to the microphone all by himself. Climbs up onto the table as he's only tiny and stares at everyone, clutching a sheet of paper in his hand.]

Um... [Suddenly has some serious stage fright] U-u-uh... L-Lambo has a q-question......

[That smile just makes it worse for reasons a five year old just can't comprehend! Almost rooted to the spot. Takes a deep breath- he's been practising this question with the Don for the last few hours. Another deep breath and then he literally shrieks the question out, complete with microphone feedback.]

NEW YORK HAS A LOT OF UNDERGROUND CRIMES AND LAMBO WANTS TO KNOW WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON IT AND HOW DO YOU INTEND TO DEAL WITH IT?!?!

[Another breath]

AND WHERE'S THE BATHROOM!?

[hey, now, the Master isn't a pedophile D:] The bathroom is, I believe, back there. [he points to the back of the hall] And as for organised crime, I believe that pre-existing factors must be examined. Take, for example, Prohibition, when the citizens turned to what was technically a crime because they believed that the government was in the wrong. Also, I believe we must consider the socioeconomic factors that drive people to commit crimes, and perhaps give everybody equal opportunities to succeed in a legal fashion, so that nobody has to resort to smuggling or killing to put food on their table.

Hello. I'm Michael Wilson.

Your vice president arbitrarily decides to unleash a nation spanning coup d'etat and have you killed, with the intent of turning this great United States of America into a totalitarian military state where the people are persecuted and tormented for the sake of twisted humor and where justice and the American spirit are bastardized into broken and horrible ghosts of their former image.

How do you respond?

[uh] First, I would seek to establish talks with said vice-president in order to see if a peaceful solution couldn't be found. Assuming all forms of diplomacy failed, I would organise a guerilla resistance, in the finest traditon of American patriotism - which, as you know, Mr President, dates all the way back to the Battle of Concord in the Revolutionary War. I would fight alongside my fellow Americans to reestablish peace and justice and restore our fine democracy.

[Nathan takes a moment to fully let the question sink in so that he can figure out how exactly he'd act ~ and thankfully he knows who his VP is at this point]

Well to be honest for someone to pull all of that off without me knowing it, probably speaks a lot higher of my failure to be a good leader. [sorry Michael] It means I've taken a less than active role in leading my country and allowed someone else to sway the very people that elected me into office ( ... )

[through the journal!]

Yeah, Doctor Owen Harper. I had the pleasure of seeing Mister Saxon in office back in my world. Funny you'd be running for president, isn't it, sir?

I'm wondering - we woke up here in New York this morning and now we're facing an election between the two of you, both castle residents who most of us know jack about. How do we know we can trust you? Why should we trust you?

[Nathan makes a note to talk to this Doctor Owen Harper about Harold Saxon, because really he's only spoken to Lucy.]I admit that waking up in my home this morning was a pleasant surprise, but the castle does tend to at the very least make you comfortable before it rips the rug out from under you. Before arriving here in Paradisa, I was elected to Congress, but eventually gave up my seat due to personal family issues, I thought I had lost my brother and was in no state to take on the office I had been elected to. That very fact, that I was willing to do whatever was best for the country instead of looking to my own political career still to me speaks higher of my character ( ... )

[an edged sort of smile] Well, Dr Harper, clearly the castle acknowledges my natural abilities. After all, while in office, I successfully lowered unemployment rates, virtually ended illegal immigration, brought peace to the Middle East and other war-torn areas, and started a number of social programs that gave help to the people who needed it. As for your question, well, aren't people used to mistrusting politicians? [an amused and slightly self-deprecating chuckle]

But really, though, my opponent is quite right. Maybe you don't know us, but we all know ourselves. We all know what's in our hearts and minds, and regardless of what the castle might do to us, that much will always remain the same. Depending on what you think of Paradisa, being chosen to run for President by the castle might not be the best endorsement - but both my opponent and I have experience in government. Now, not everybody knows that, true, but isn't that why we're here? We're being given the choice to speak to the citizens of Paradisa to show you what we think ( ... )
