Seventh Mind Read - Getting Down to Business

Oct 14, 2011 22:28

[Having finally having had a chance to speak with Fred about his plans for Cerebro, Charles figures it's high time he spoke with his other potential assistants. He knows it's a big project, but it'll be well worth everyone's time in the long run. Sitting out on the roof, Charles clears his throat a moment, before writing a filter into his journal.]

In my ... uhhh ... Oh, right! [it takes him a second to remember the guy, since he's only ever talked to him in a weird, castle-induced situation and technically wasn't actually THERE]

What's the project?

((OOC: Throwing you Ray instead of Five if'n you don't mind - the Time Lord's slate is a bit busy atm, and Ray's isn't.))

Yes indeed. I had a feeling your doppleganger might not mention me, but that's all right.

Basically, it's a telepathic transmitter. When used, it amplifies and broadcasts an individual's brainwaves, and in the case of a telepath, greatly expands the range of their abilities.

((OOC:S'all good! <3))

Oh, no, he did, it just ... took me a sec to remember, is all.

Wow, that sounds great! I've worked with something like that on a really, really small scale - more like a wave scanner with digital visualization capabilities. I dunno how much help I'll be, but I'll do whatever I can!

[warning: his big scanner was a colander with K'nex and wires and things sticking out all over it, hooked up to an old Apple monitor. it was not exactly high tech]

Ahh, all right then. I wish I could have met you in person during all that. Not that your avatar wasn't a fascinating man to speak with, of course. I was particularly interested in that "mood slime" you had on display.

I'm hoping to use it in case we face another foe like Legato, so that I, or one of the castle's other talented telepaths can match him in strength. My plan was to build it in the Peace Patrol's headquarters, in the interest of both working with them, and making sure that such a device has adequate security keeping it from being used by the wrong sort.

[Considering the device Hank built, it's not that much different. If all else fails, that's why Charles asked Shiki to come up with elegant designs for such a device. She may seem like an odd sort of helper for this sort of project, but Charles never does anything without reason.]

Oh, the mood slime! Yeah, that stuff is fantastic. I wish I'd gotten to keep it, but it was just a memory, so. I guess it was never really here to begin with. If I had all my notes about its chemical composition, the ones Egon and I made, I might be able to reconstruct it, but ... I dunno if it'd work the same way.

That's not too bad an idea, but ... Legato's bein' held down there, too. You might wanna do all the planning and stuff in a place where he can't see ya. He can't read anyone's mind, the Doctor said, but he can still hear us and see us, so. Better be careful.

Indeed. Though I wonder if it might be possible to formulate something similar, a conductor of psionic energy that'll be safer to use than simple wires and transistors, anyway.

[Charles puts his fingers to is temple, filtering his telepathic voice directly into Ray's mind.]

That won't be a problem. We can do all the designing independent of the actual construction, and if it comes to it, I obviously have ways of communicating that don't involve using my voice.

Might be, yeah -- but then there's the question of what we'd use for conductive mat--

[and then he gets an unexpected voice right in his head. Charles might notice just how ridiculously easy it was to get in - Ray's a very trusting person, even on a psychic level. he's never had a psychic conversation before, though, so ... he's not really thinking there's a possibility of talking back. this is a man who's really only ever been possessed, as far as psychic phenomena go]

[Charles can't help but smile a bit, never growing tired of that reaction. He lowers his hand, returning to verbal communication.]

I apologize for my forwardness, Ray, but yes, I'm a telepath myself. Hence my interest in conductors of psychic energy and the like. Unfortunately, my particular field of study happens to be genetics, focusing on mutations and evolution, so my knowledge of engineering and paranormal studies are rather minimal. That's where the likes of you, and Ms. Burkle come in.

[it takes him a second to recover from the shock of having another mind sandwiched in with his, but once he does...] ... Wow. That's fascinating. How does it work...?!

[Grateful that Ray isn't angry at his sudden intrusion, Charles is more than willing to explain the process.]

It's remarkably simple, actually. Due to the physiological differences in the structure of my brain due to my mutation, my brain is able to broadcast my thoughts, my...consciousness outward. As a result of this, I can communicate via my thoughts in the minds of others, an obviously read their thoughts, among other things. You could say that my physical brain has a looser "hold" on my consciousness than a normal human, allowing it to venture out.

So it's a physical phenomenon, not a paranormal one? ... Wow, that's fascinating! ... Is that common where you're from? How far a proximity range do you have? Does it work on animals, too? Can you, like, order takeout that way and save on phone bills? Or communicate with, say, the castle ghosts - entities that aren't corporeal with an actual, physical brain or nervous system that still have a consciousness?!

[now just look what you've gotten yourself into, Charles Xavier]
