The sneaky bastard who holds the cards is always going to keep you guessing. It's how this sort of thing goes. You can ask 'why' for an eternity and never get an answer. Trust me, I've tried.

See, that's the thing! It's so easy to psych yourself out, don't you agree? You think you're onto something, you say it, and then you realize the castle let you say it, presuming the castle cares at all, and so it goes...
Maybe we can never win, but if we keep going... if we keep fighting... we can never lose, either.
And if the castle thinks that's a joke, well, there's not a lot I can do about it. But it can't change my mind, and there's not a lot it can do about that. I guess that's a fair trade.
I don't mind it, anyway. Even if it's impossible to gain a conclusive victory that we'd recognize... at least we'll preserve our self-respect, you know?
I doubt it is possible to ever have a true "map" of anything in this world.
In regards to your apparent freedom of speech, it is not uncommon in many religious systems to hear of a creator allowing free will. Or perhaps a more Deistic approach in that the world and its rules were created and then simply left to turn in its own way. Though that is less likely considering there have been many instances in while it has broken its own rules.
It is likely impossible to center on the actual truth of the castle, however. No matter what theory seems to reign over others in terms of predicting how this world was created or what it was created for, it does seem that all progress in research to confirm any theory regarding itself is permanently stunted. Then again, that, too, may be subject to change.

It's just, the castle isn't exactly like a diety, is it? Rather, it's something that seems inclined to protect its own interests - at least sometimes. For instance, last Christmas when it stopped collecting people for a while - that seemed self-destructive. In the end it had to start collecting again... so, wouldn't it be to its advantage if we were all kept as much in the dark as possible? We didn't have to find those things out...
[sighs.] Well, I hope it's possible to find out more, at least. Maybe over time... since things have seemed to open...

Not exactly. But it's never been confirmed that the castle is the one controlling its own actions, if I recall correctly. Of course, it could be that it is -- but either way, we are left with no explanation for how it came into existence in the first place.
The reason why I say that it may be subject to change is in reference to more recent events. More information has become available about the territory outside of the immediate area. While there has yet to be anything particularly concrete, perhaps it is a step in that direction.

- true enough. I guess I tend to forget that I make that assumption, that the castle is in charge of all of us - although wouldn't the fact that when it was busted up at Christmas, all of the people it had in thrall were released, be kind of an argument against that?
Xander had been building a few homes outside of the castle area. There was a mansion for a rather tall person and also he was building one for Lana, but I don't know if either ever got near enough to finished.
Was he the kind of person that could really build an entire mansion on his own? Did he have people helping him? If you wouldn't mind taking a gander, it'd be appreciated.

...but the thing about powerful beings is that they tend to underestimate us 'little' people, which is when we get the chance to act.
[laughs] Of course, it let me say that, so who knows?

Haha, I don't think I could possibly go through all of this on my own, actually! At least not in a night...
