"Everything has to give sometime, right?" The smoke curled out over the hood of the car and he couldn't decide it if was worth it to say how dangerous it was again.

"I guess." Truth be told, he didn't care much for his waxing on sympathetic riddles. It happened so often lately that it was becoming more rare to get a normal word out of the boy.

"But what happens if there is nothing left but cold eyes?" He had no idea what that meant or if it was even supposed to mean something, but he nodded along and pretened it was a burst of wisdom.

"I don't know, maknae." The boy just looked back out at the water, his white pants hanging over his toes.

"...when can I go home?" The sanity of the question knocked the air out of him and he was suddenly faced with two deep eyes, on the verge of breaking.

"As soon as you're well..." He had to force out the scripted answer, unable to look away from such a rare moment of sanity.

"I hate it here. I miss my family...I miss you." It was like the moment was liable to crush him and his heart slammed in his chest.

"We miss you too. You just have to work hard and listen to the doctors. Then you can come home." He knew they were the wrong words the second his eyes drooped and clouded over again. He could swear he saw the boy retreat back into his world, clawing and screaming to come back before it was gone and his eyes were empty.

"I wonder if the stars ever get sad." He nearly choked on the loss of it, looking back out at the the water with trembling hands.

"I would bet my life they do."
