She sat quietly by the lakeside watching as the sun bathed everything in a warm golden glow. It was peaceful here, no noise but the gentle hush of the wind as it created ripples across the lake surface, or the occasional splash of waterfowl. Her lips twitched into a small smile. If only everything was this peaceful.
“Not exactly swimming weather is it?”
She whipped her head around, eyes searching for the owner of the voice. She found him easily, leaning against a tree, the cool morning air making his breath come out in clouds. He smiled and moved to join her, crouching down in the cool earth beside her.
“I didn’t hear you coming.” She murmured, keeping her eyes on the lake.
“I can move quietly when I want to. I’m part panther.” He joked.
The girl sighed and shook her head, moving one hand to brush coppery strands of hair away from her face. Still she refused to look at him.
“Why’d you come down here so often Sarah?”
Her eyes fell from the lake at that question. The golden question. Now she turned to look at him, her eyes filled with pain despite her stony visage. She stared for a moment, as if judging whether he was worthy of knowing her secret. When she did speak her voice was soft, using nervous hushed tones.
“I like it down here John. It’s peaceful. Sometimes it feels like the only place in the world that is…”
Gingerly the boy moved and placed one arm around her shoulders, pulling her into him protectively.
“They won’t fight forever Sarah.”
“But what if Daddy wins?”
