spent these summer days driving

tom and i got back last nite from four days at the beach house his family rents in rhode island.

i'd been a bit nervous about spending so much up-close time with the entire family, but i actually had a great time.
even though the parents split us up. i shared a room with his neurotic 30-year-old sister who designs pop-up cards and goes to sleep at 10 pm.

summering at the beach in rhode island is so all-american. i kept having visions of john and bobby kennedy shirtless, tossing a football while jackie o., in her sunglasses and headscarf, watched from a deck chair.
or something.

it's all building sand castles and floating in the pool and barbecuing and evening trips to the village ice-cream shop.
yesterday we went canoeing on a salt pond to a hidden beach just as the sun was setting. straight off of a fucking postcard.

me and tom, two of his cousins and a cousin's girlfriend.

i'd kill for pictures.

apparently that's just what you do when you grow up in new england.

also spent some time with tom's brother and sister-in-law. who have an unbelievably cute 2-year-old girl and another on the way. and they're three years older than me.
we'd wait till tom's parents and the baby went to bed and stay up drinking beer and they'd all moan about how crazy the parents are.

which is what you do when you grow up anywhere.

...getting back to the city was a shock. we woke up and went outside today and it was so hot and nasty we wanted to get back in the car and find that beach. think i might try and stay out of the city as much as possible this summer. i'm here right now though, and i don't know what's next. got no jobs lined up and no real plans. so if something's coming up, let me know.
