I am downloading so many things right now they don't fit in one box on my little downloadie program. Thank god for good friends who listen to good music.
So. I'm playing with the new iTunes Genius application. It works very well, suspiciously. What you do is you click on a song, and at the bottom, you click the Genius icon (this is about a half an hour of it sorting through your library), and what it does is it puts together a playlist of a bunch of songs that sound like that song. I did it a couple times without listening, just looking through the songs it picked, and not only did I realize that a lot of my music sounds quite the same (Arcade Fire, Beirut, Coldplay, Death Cab...yeah, they all have their differences, but they're also rather pigeon-holed, aren't they?), this thing is very good at what it does. It matches Beirut with Arcade fire, it matches Yael Naim with Regina Spektor. This thing knows where it's at.
This is gonna save me a lot of trouble. I currently have over 4,500 songs in my iTunes library, and going through all those songs usually ends in two things: frustration and watching TV. +laugh+ The only downside to it is that it forced me to put in credit card info, because in addition to making playlists of the music you already have, it suggests things you might want to buy based on what you already listen to. Not a big deal, really, compared to how well it seems to work.
My current playlist is based on Beirut's One Smiling Sunday. I'm trying to find a playlist to remind me of fall, after all the excellent suggestions I got on my previous note. :) So hopefully this will get me listening to all the songs I had previously skipped over in favor of songs I already knew. I'm really bad like that, I'll download something and not listen to it for months. Now that I don't have to do the work of listening to each song before sticking it in a playlist, I'll probably listen to a lot more music. As weird as that seems. I only wish I could use it on my iPod, instead of having to make playlists on my computer and then copying them over to my iPod. I like to be spontaneous. :p
This thing is also showing me just how kick-ass my new headphones are. They are. I have never heard these songs so clearly. This was a great birthday gift. Toda raba, Papa. :)
Mabon is coming up. Not sure what I'm gonna do celebrate (so hard not to type silliebraet, thank you LOLcats). Just know it's gonna be awesome.
Oh. And in case you hadn't noticed. Updated the Livejournal layout. It's quite pretty, but I don't think it'll last long; it's almost Halloween after all. ;)
