Author’s Notes: My second favourite part of Sleeper was Owen randomly spraying plants with water through a whole part of dialogue. So I came up with five reasons why he might be doing it. It sounds cracky, but actually isn’t! I apologise for the lack of other awesome things, but I’ve had two lots of coursework and a shitload of depression to deal with. Anyway, here I am, helping out with the Owen/plants OTP thing. Our boy has layers!

Five Reasons Owen Harper Waters Plants

1.

Suzie liked to grow things. She had this obsession with death - Owen would’ve asked, if he thought he could’ve handled the answer - so she played with the Glove and grew things in the basement, trying to counteract the inevitable. She looked almost happy when she was surrounded by thriving green plants; one of the only things this bloody planet does right she said.

Actually, he thinks they shagged down there once; mud-streaked jeans, compost in their hair. Laughing like teenagers.

Suzie left him a post-it the day she killed herself.

Look after them.

Owen figured he owed her that much.

2.

When they were doing up the Hub, they weren’t sure what to do with the old briefing room.

“Could turn it into a greenhouse,” Owen suggested idly, tapping his biro against his teeth. “Grow human and alien plants, see what happens.”

Gwen raised her eyebrows; apparently she’d thought he was going to suggest some kind of orgy room. But really, she doesn’t know him as well as she thinks she does.

“And who will be taking care of your mini jungle?” Ianto asked. His tone implied that whoever it was, it wouldn’t be him.

Owen sighed.

“Ok, fine. I will.”

3.

Ianto kicked up a fuss over the mess on Owen’s workstation; apparently half his paperwork from the last three months was missing.

“I don’t know why you bitch so much,” Owen told him. “I mean, your job isn’t exactly taxing, is it? Making coffee, cleaning up spillages, watering plants, putting bits of paper in folders…”

“And that’s on top of the field work you’ve all dumped on me,” Ianto pointed out.

Owen made a face.

“Fine,” Ianto snapped, “I bet fifty quid that you couldn’t handle even half my job.”

“You’re on, mate,” Owen told him, holding out a hand.

4.

Ianto would always resent him, and Gwen would always see him as her accidental shag, so neither of them would ever see that Owen was trying his very best to claw back the last of his integrity. Or whatever substitute his personality had found for integrity, this late in the game.

Owen stopped intimidating the Weevils, having one night stands, and making casually cruel comments. He experimented with cleaning up his own messes, took care of their mini greenhouse, and tried to connect with people occasionally.

Sometimes, he saw Tosh smiling at him, and he thought she might have noticed.

5.

There was a woman in their basement who was definitely not human and possibly going to kill them all. Never a good way to spend Wednesday.

No one had got around to watering the plants in their greenhouse thing - it seemed like a good idea at the time, but Torchwood wasn’t exactly known for it’s nurturing qualities, was it - and Owen decided he might as well do it. After all, gardening was meant to be soothing or something.

With the team panicking and the greenery dying around him, Owen decided that the one thing the plants definitely weren’t was ‘soothing’.
