I respect my friends. I like to think I associate with intelligent people, despite the fact that I often disagree with them since they are often insightful in their commentary, which helps me to reason out my own opinions.
However, after a scant hour on the internet this morning I have to say that the knee-jerk reactionary drivel I have been reading has lowered my estimation of more than a few. It is saddening since I don't think that "IQ's dropped sharply while I was away".
A few other thoughts:
Really, if you are so threatened by the election results that you are contemplating moving to another country (and not just joking about it), please do. The moral cowardice required for such an action speaks volumes about your character. There are no death squads beating down your door or coming to take your children as in other countries. The last time that happened here was in Florida and Texas under a Democratic president as I recall. There is no compulsory military service, nor will there be. Can you imagine trying to get that through congress. No politician who wanted re-election could vote for it in this climate. Please do some reading before you spout off about a draft.
Seeking to flee to another country is a serious thing, made all the more so since thousands of people have tried to flee here from actual oppressive regimes with closed borders and zero personal freedoms. No internet rantings, no gatherings to protest a war, no voting in elections, no free press. And many died before they got here. To compare this country to one of these is pretty much ludicrous. America is far from perfect, yet for all its flaws it is possessed of more freedoms and opportunities for its people than just about anywhere else.
The people of this nation spoke in greater numbers than before giving the current president a clear majority of 3.5 million people. So if you voted, good for you. If not, that is a choice you made for whatever reason. That is democracy.
