Halloween was nothing special this year. Had plenty of candy and cookies while at work, so that satisfied the sugar-needy 6-year-old in me. The high point, however, was Union Avenue Opera's low-tech high-art production of Benjamin Britten's Turn of the Screw. It's a creepy opera about possessed children, and it gave me enough heebie-jeebies to last an evening. The low point, however, was the onset of a sick feeling I had...
...which made me pretty useless this week. I thought it might be strep or, even more annoying, an ear infection. When all is said and done, I'm a serious hypochondriac. This was confirmed when I went to my doctor only to discover that I was just suffering a common cold. Nevertheless, I'm fighting this cold like mad because...
...I've got a wedding engagement to sing at this Saturday...in Quincy. It's for the daughter of one of my college theatre directors, Connie. The songs aren't inordinately difficult, but it will take twice the stamina if my cold hasn't gone away. I leave for Quincy tomorrow around 3pm to get to the rehearsal at 5:45. I'll be in Quincy until Sunday...
...when I bid a final "adieu" to Solano Hall, formerly the music department building on QU campus. Solano shall be razed soon to make way for a new Science/Fine Arts building slated to open in 2010*. The music department was recently moved to its temporary location, North Campus, until the new building opens. Of what I've heard from Fr. Ralph Parthie, the music students and faculty are happy with the move and the administration is attempting to make their 4-year stay up there as bearable as possible. I don't know if it's such a great deal, given that recruiting new music students will be 500% harder now. But then again, I'm an alumni, and I have yet to donate more than $10 after graduation...so my opinion probably doesn't matter in the grand scheme.
*Given how long it took for that godawful fitness center, I think 2010 actually = 2013.
Since Solano is due for a date with the wrecking ball very soon, Quincy University has decided to hold a "
Wake" for the building this Sunday, Nov 5th. Past orphans, football dorm residents and music students are invited to share their experiences. Also, we'll get to walk through the building one last time. It all sounds a bit weird, but I'm glad they're not merely forgetting the building altogether. Might as well take some pictures and say my last goodbyes...
...and that ends my first November entry. Later, folks.
