ajzkitten69 who wanted a Helena/Valentine romance with the prompt of: "She often forgets that this Valentine doesn't remember the other world that she does."

Helena awakes one morning to the sound of Valentine pacing their small trailer. She leans up on her elbows and, in the early morning light with her sleep-fogged brain, swears she can see his mask, his spiked beard. But he looks over at her, smiles, and she knows there's no mask. "How'd you sleep?" she asks, sitting up and pulling the blankets onto her lap.

He paces some more and she thinks, for a moment, that he didn't hear her. Then he glances over and shakes his head. "I had a strange dream," he says, running his fingers through his hair. She rubs her eyes a little, pushing back the memory of him yelling at books, collecting jewels.

"Strange how?" she asks, leaning back against the wall.

He sits down on the edge of the bed, the mattress sinking a bit with his weight. "I was in a world filled with odd creatures; monkey birds and books that wilted when they felt unwanted. There were man-faced creatures with wings that loved riddles, and a tower that spoke to me." He pauses and looks over at her, and for a minute she's back in that world with him. "There was an evil queen, a Queen of Darkness, and she wanted you. She wanted to take you from me." He reaches over and takes her hand, eyes locking with hers. "And I let her."

Helena places both her hands around his one and leans forward. "What if it wasn't a dream?" she suggests, knowing it's a stupid move. "What if it's a memory?"

He laughs, lets go of her hand and kisses her forehead. "That's bloody insane," he says as he stands up, shaking his head as his laughter fills the trailer again. "I'll see you in the tent." He walks away, muttering "A memory" beneath his breath and laughing some more.

Helena sits for a minute, trying to figure out how her heart can belong to two different people when those two people are the same man. She forgets that Valentine doesn't remember the same world she does, the one filled of magic and fantasy, and she clings to the hope (however small it is) that one day Valentine will remember everything, that he'll realize she's not crazy.
