I just wanted to pick your brains for a moment, and this is still somewhat Halloween related. A question:

What is your favorite scary book?

I haven't read too much horror, but I think my favorite is Coraline by Neil Gaiman. But The Shining and Dracula scared me the most when I read them for the first time. I'm asking this because I've decided ( Read more... )

brainz, i don't even have a tag for this, writing woes, i love my flist, help!, ask the flist, bookish things, omg zombies

Anything by Stephen King is sure to creep me out, and leave me with visuals I can't get out of my head. *shivers* Other than him I don't read a ton of horror, to be honest, because it does tend to stay with me so long, especially any gory stuff.

That sounds like an awesome idea for a book ... I love the idea of all this disparate threads coming together. Good luck with it! :D

Re: the fanfic question ... I think the only touchy part is what you identified already, that none of the concepts or characters could be "recognizable" from their origins (down to specifics, I mean). Because otherwise, I think writers borrow from popular conceits and stereotypes all the time, and if we weren't able to there wouldn't be a whole lot left to use, right? ;P

I haven't read too much King, surprisingly, but he is the master of the genre, for sure.

Thanks! I can't wait to have time to write it! It's tentatively called "The Suburbs" (but damn you Arcade Fire for naming your Grammy winning album that, I might need a new title now, boo), because all the stories will either take place in the same town or be about people from the town (and it will be a kind of unnamed Anytown, USA deal). I'm excited!

That's very true, especially working within a genre. And I think by the time I change enough to have the characters be unrecognizable (IN MY HEAD I WILL KNOW IT'S MILES) I'll have re-written the whole thing anyway. I think I'm going to use them as a basis for plot and that's it. :DD
