“More coffee Archie?”

Archie turned away from the window where he was lost in thought and looked up at Granny.

“Uh, yes please.  Ruby isn’t working today?” He asked, trying not to sound overly interested.

Granny threw her free hand up the air as she filled up Archie’s cup.

“Oh don’t get me started on that girl. No, she’s at home.  Says she needs a mental health day.  It’s unbelievable what passes for a valid excuse now a days to not show up to work.  I can’t fathom ever using that on with one of my jobs when I was young.”

Archie sat up, looking worried.

“Is she alright”

“Oh she’s just fine.  Broke up with her latest boyfriend that’s all.”

Archie tried to hide his smile.

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

Granny scoffed. “I’m not. He was just another loser in a long list of men nowhere near good enough for my granddaughter. “

This time Archie didn’t bother to try hide his smile.

“I can’t understand why it takes so long for women to realize the value of a good man who would treat them like gold. Instead they chase after all these bad boys who treat them like crap. They mistakenly think they can change them into those good men but I’m old and wise enough to know you can’t change people.  If they’ would just go for the right guy in the first place, they’d save themselves a world of heartache. “You’re a psychiatrist Archie. Do you know why?”

Archie leaned back in the booth and took off his glasses.

“Well, often it makes the person feel special, especially at the beginning of the relationship.  They see themselves as the one person who can bring out the good in the other.  Plus it often comes from a desire to see the best in people.  That in itself isn’t a bad quality.  It’s a sign of a kind heart. Unfortunately it also makes them easier targets to be taken advantage of. “

Granny placed the coffee pot on the table and sat across from him

“So why can’t they see it in the good ones.”

“Well often the good ones , as you call them, aren’t as flashy.  They don’t draw attention to themselves.  Or they could just be shy or insecure about rejection - “

He stopped, noticing the smirk on Granny’s face. Realizing that she was no longer looking at this from a hypothetical perspective, he felt the warmth in his face and hoped it wasn’t as red as it felt.  If it was, Granny showed no signs of seeing it.

“Hmm.” She said. “Maybe the good ones need to start stepping up to the plate.”

She winked at him, got up and grabbed her pot. She took at few steps away from and turned around.

“I made a big batch of pies this last weekend.  Too many to sell fresh in the diner.  Why don’t you stop by the inn tonight and pick one up.  You can even stay for a sample.”

“Umm, well.... I’ll have to see when my last appointment is and….”

Granny placed her free hand on her hip and gave him a stern look.

“S..seven.”  He stuttered. “My last appointment is at seven I think.  I’ll come by right after.”

She nodded and smiled.

“Great.  See  you tonight Archie.”

She went back to waiting on the rest of the tables leaving a very baffled Archie sitting and thinking of how he exactly he was going to “step up to the plate”.
