"Your ego is absolutely colossal." - It Happened One Night
"You have the biggest ego of anyone I've ever met!"
If it were physically possible, James Wilson's jaw would have hit the floor. "Me? You're joking, right? I mean..."
"I'm not joking at all," she said, folding her arms over her ribs and fixing him with an accusing stare. "I don't joke."
James was glad his friends weren't around to hear that or there would be a never-ending stream of ‘I told you so's. "There's a reason why she's single, Wilson," Jacob Cornwell liked to say. They'd all warned him (at least three times, they would claim) that Rebecca Warren had no sense of humor. They'd also warned him that she didn't even put out, so there was no consolation prize for dealing with her. James had been fairly certain he'd be able to change that but now he was starting to wonder.
"What do you mean, I have a big ego?" he demanded. Self-importance was most definitely not part of the image he tried to project.
"You think you're smarter than everybody."
"Not everybody," he said weakly. "I am smarter than the average person, but I don't flaunt it or anything... Just knowing it doesn't make me egotistical..."
Rebecca rolled her eyes. "You think you're smarter than everybody, you're terribly vain - don't even try to deny it, James, you spend more time in front of the mirror than I do, and I know you're going to say that's because I'm naturally beautiful whereas you need a lot more work, which brings me to my third point. You think you're so smooth you can get into any girl's panties and you know what? You can't."
He made an attempt to look scandalized but only managed a slightly baffled expression. Most people never caught on to any of those things, especially ones who didn't cohabitate with him. How had Rebecca seen through his super-nice-guy façade? He realized he was going to have to work a lot harder to sell his act from now on. And he also realized that he was not going to get laid.
