Will it definitely keep growing? Is there anything else the vet might want to try first?
If those are the only possibilities, it's a terribly hard decision, and I can't say for sure what I'd do either. But if Nyx is otherwise happy and enjoying life, then the amputation sounds like the least-worst option.
If you can amputate the leg, you need to do it soon before it grows too large for the cat to have surgery at all. My cat had a tumor that grew too large for surgery and we had to put him down. :(
Also be sure that the surgery itself won't be too stressful for him. I wanted to have the surgery done even though there was a chance the cat might not come through. But I never had the choice for amputation, so I'd go with that.
As for affording the operation, ask your vet what type of payment plans they have. They may work something out with you.
