I have a lot of school work to tackle, but I have basically blown it off the last two days. My mind knows when it needs a break; when it can no longer absorb seemingly useless information. So yesterday was spent researching; that's what I like to do in my downtime. Yesterday's topic was The Black Panther Party. I read biographies of Bobby Seale, Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis, Fred Hampton, Huey Newton, and the many other personalities who were at the forefront of this movement. I purchased the autobiography of Assata Shakur (aka Joanne Chesimard) from Alibris. I love Alibris; I've able to locate just about every out-of-print book that I've wanted. I also researched the history of the BPP, along with the Black Liberation Army (BLA) and the Republic of New Afrika (RNA). All extremely interesting and invaluable in tracing the militant "Black Power" movement in our country's history. I enjoy reading radical history: a few weeks ago I spent researching the Symbionese Liberation Army, then the Weather Underground. I think the American Indian Movement (AIM) is next on the list. I have to admit, if my years with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) taught me anything, it was to be a student of history. As cliche as it sounds, history can, and will, repeat itself if we refuse to learn the lesson of the past. The American left has been continually stymied by infighting, worn out dogma, and intense paranoia. So often their actions are self-defeating; they become known more for their actions; the message invariably becoming lost.
I bought a Christmas tree yesterday. Ok, it's a 6 foot fake, but I hate the idea of chopping down a living tree. It has the multi-colored lights built in, so that is one expense that I won't have to worry about. I've been trying to collect the old "Shiny Brite" ornaments from the 50's. I guess everyone is trying to relive their childhood, because they are terribly expensive. Of course this is the time of year where everyone is out shopping for them. I'm going to have a very small Xmas party, and my non-Christian friends are already rolling their eyes at my inclusion of Christmas music cds. I guaranteed them that after a few B&B's they would be singing right along. When I was a child, I went out caroling every holiday season. As far as I remember, none of my neighbors went deaf. LOL!
Time for lunch...Creamed spinach omelet and tea.
Have a happy day!
