The baby had fallen asleep in her arms, but Pam didn't want to put her down. She just.. couldn't stop looking at her.

She wasn't sure it really counted as a proper meeting when the baby was asleep, but River didn't want to be rude.
"Hello, Samantha," she said quietly. "I'm River, and I'm going to make sure you always have fun and never have to be afraid of anything."

She reached up with her free hand to brush back the little bit of dark hair on her head, then looked back at River.
"Did you want to hold her?"

River started to shake her head at Pam's offer, sure Pam was only being nice and didn't really trust her to hold her baby. She really wanted to, though, so she didn't outright refuse.
"Really?" she asked, eyes wide. "Are you sure?"

"It's very nice to finally meet you, Samantha," she said, bending over the baby in her arms to press a careful kiss to her forehead, overcome a little bit by the fresh new scent of her. "New little person. You're already crew, you know, even if you haven't been on Serenity yet. I'll teach you to fly, someday. We might have to talk your mother into it, but don't worry. Don't worry about anything."

River sat down gently in the chair beside the bed, only a tiny bit still nervous that she might do something wrong.
"I think she looks like you and Jim all mashed up," she decided after a moment's careful study. "And something of herself, too, but she hasn't decided what that is quite yet."

The baby squirmed slightly, and River instinctively rocked back and forth gently in the chair to calm her. She couldn't quite believe she could love someone she had just met so much, but she supposed that babies were special that way.
