Again, a large part of my belief system has been misrepresented. As many of my more close confederates know, I am a Pagan. I practice a kind of elemental magic, and most people who cast spells are known under the blanket term "witch". I really don't mind being called a witch. But it's times like thse that I want to *headdesk*, over and over and over.
It's this show, Paranormal State. The family that called up the investigators was having trouble with scratching and growling and knocking in the night. It soon progressed to poltergeist activity and the sight of something dark and shadowy moving throughout the house. The last straw came when their three year old started spouting obscenities that she would never have heard since they apparently don't let their kid out, and lying on the floor in the foetal position, crying.
The team called in a psychic (Michelle Belanger, who's an expert on psychic vampyres and who is apparently very kewl). She saw something trying to claw to the surface of the atmosphere within the house, and said it had been invited.
Funny thing was, the whole trouble started when the wife's brother, I think came to stay with them for a while. The team tracked him down and corralled him in a diner. He had a pentagram tattoo and said he practiced witchcraft. I thought, "Oh fuck." He said he cast a circle in the presence of his family to call a shadow demon and that it had leapt at them and that they were really scared. The "scared" part he smiled at, so I assumed, from his proud tone of voice he'd meant the demon to scare them, or he'd meant the summoning to be a show of his power.
Fuckin' asshat. The thing about summoning ANYTHING is that it doesn't want to be there. That's why you invoke, ask, call, and only with positive influences that will come if they want. It's why ceremonial magicians had such a complex system-they mostly dealt with summoning spirits, so they had loads of protections. I wouldn't demand the time of any fucking spirit, and I sure as Hell wouldn't leave the circle until it was good and fucking closed. And then broken.
I just want to shake that dude until his teeth rattle. Because it was on TV more and more people are going to have misconceptions about witches. More people are gonna think we're evil, or just spiritually irresponsible jackasses. We should be doing good for its own sake, not to prove to the Abrahamic religions (Jews, Christians, Muslims) that we're not evil. Every time I think we're pretty much past all that, some doofus like this dude comes along. what's worse, is that prayers and house blessings aren't working for these people. Dare i say it, another witch should come in to balance the scales, bind the demon(s) [don't know why, but I swear I feel there's more than one], and seal the doorway. But with what their brother did, they'll never trust anyone who calls him or herself "witch" again. Pity.
If you have any talent with magic at all, it's not a toy, let alone something to use as a show of power or a prank. It's a life path, and a responsibility. Hope, everyone, hope for good things.
