In conclusion, the metabolic rates of mice accustomed to heat were lower than that of the control mice. In addition, the body temperatures of the experimental mice were also lower than the body temperatures of the control mice and the tissues active in metabolism in mice adapted to heat weighed less than control mice. This supports the alternative hypothesis that adaptation to hot dry climates leads to a change in metabolism in small mammals, particularly deer mice.
