In To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce the novelists use the modern techniques studying the duration of time, breaking traditional narrative forms.

In To the Lighthouse, Woolf studies of duration of time to make many major events occur in a small amount of textual space, differing from previous literary styles. In "Time Passes," the content focuses on the degrading house while announcements about characters are stated briefly in paranthetical passages. For example when Andrew dies in World War I, Woolf writes "______".
