Lorelei frowned. She wasn’t quite sure how this had happened at all. She was just walking around and not doing anything wrong at all, when-well, yes, yes she was. This was entirely her fault (okay, part of it had to be Raffy’s, he was the irresponsible one, after all!), but she was having trouble admitting that to herself.
She and Rafael had been wandering through the woods. They were supposed to find a man who had apparently gotten access to some secret files of Professor Hojo’s. Their job was to track him down and bring him back to the headquarters for a proper questioning and possibly execution. They had last seen him taking refuge in these woods, running from soldiers that were hot on his tail. At first they had thought the secrets were only minor things-but when the Professor had found other, more delicate files missing, well, that was when Lorelei and Rafael had been assigned to the mission.
As she wandered aimlessly through the forest, she recalled, idly, the briefing that had taken place in Mr. Tseng’s office. She knew Raffy had not really been paying attention, and she herself had been quite bored with the mission… where was the fun in hunting someone down like they were bloodhounds? Lorie wanted some action, adventure, and danger! If she wanted to hunt, she’d go on vacation and visit her father’s estate back in Mideel. This was child’s play.
Mr. Tseng had noticed their indifference and disinterest, though, and had to tell them twice. She thought it was kind of cute when Raffy kept saying “yeah, yeah, uh huh, yes, okay,” over and over again, even when he had been asked questions that would make no sense with a reply like that. Mr. Tseng’s mouth began to twitch then. She giggled a lot and he glared at her.
Lorie smiled slowly, recalling the memories. Then she remembered that she was lost, and frowned, reminding herself that it had only occurred a few hours ago… who knew she would be in a position like this now? She looked up, a look of concern washed across her features as the light of the sky in between the trees began to darken slowly. If night fell, finding Raffy (and her way back to civilization) might prove to be quite difficult. She wasn’t scared-she’d spent much of her time out in the woods anyway-just annoyed at the inconvenience of it all.
Groaning to herself, she kept walking, one of her shotguns slung over her shoulder, regretting getting distracted and wandering off. Okay, maybe it was mostly her fault… but Raffy should have been looking back a lot more often! That way he could have noticed she was gone and they could have found one another more quickly.
Lorelei sighed.
Soon, the woods began to wear thin. She thought she saw lights, and some building structures in the distance… any sort of civilization, she would be thankful for. This inspired a bounce in her step, and smiling, she hurried to the clearing.
Upon reaching it, she blinked confusedly. It seemed she had not found a city, but instead, a large structure of domes. It reminded her something of back home, but she knew this wasn’t it-still, someone there might be able to give her help, so she trudged forward, toward the nearest entrance gate. She was cautious, worrisome if the large gun she toted might scare anyone…
Peering inside, she noticed it seemed that there indeed was a city-inside of the domes! Her eyes alighted with interest, a smile crossing her features. She had never seen anything like this before, and it looked very interesting, and fun. Was it some sort of small town? Or a place where a tournament was held?
The questions that raced through her mind were interrupted by a voice. “Name?”
The sandy blonde turned her head in its direction. She saw a tense-looking man standing behind a booth. “Excuse me?” she inquired politely.
“Your name.”
“Oh… would you please tell me what this place is?” she asked. She wasn’t too keen on giving her name right off the bat; she didn’t want to unintentionally “sign up” for anything.
“It’s the city of Paixao,” he replied tensely.
Ah! Wonderful, just what she was looking for! She smiled brightly and then nodded. “I see. It’s quite a nice place you’ve got here-“
“Name.”
“Oh! Ahaha, oh. Right. Well, you can call me Lorelei Wilhelmina Passerose II. That’s L-O-R… E-L-”
“That’ll do,” he said, and hurriedly picked up something from behind his booth, a small black square object, and tossed it her way. “You’ll need this to communicate within the city.”
Blinking as the object fell into her free hand, Lorelei stared down at it a moment… then looked back up at him, giving him a sage nod and another sunshine-quality smile. “Thank you, sir!” And with that, the woman headed into the city…
…And was immediately greeted with something unexpected. Out of nowhere a strange creature appeared before her. Then another. Then another, and more still… until a whole slew of the odd white, wriggling creatures surrounded her. Lorelei’s eyes widened in confusion and she looked about frantically, trying to make sense of this all. What were these things? She had never seen anything like them before… and she’d seen a lot of creatures in her day, considering she was a big game huntress.
The gig was up when one lunged at her. Immediately, she slung her gun off her shoulder and whacked the thing away, which only resulted in another attempting to do the same. Hurriedly she aimed and shot-bullet coursing through the air, it penetrated the thing square in its head.
But one came from behind. She spun and repeated the action, hitting every single one that came at her with amazing accuracy-it was obvious she had the eye of a markswoman. However, soon enough, she had ran out of ammunition… which meant it was time to make a run for it. Cursing under her breath, Lorie pushed through what was left of them and ran on, finding an alley to duck into for the moment.
Panting, she hurriedly reloaded, just in case she’d need more soon. Most likely.
What kind of place was this?
