I bought a puppy yesterday! She's a Japanese Chin and her name is Zoe. (In Greek, it looks like this: ZWH) Since my roommate and I are sharing an apartment that's pet friendly, I decided I'd get a dog. It started off with a trip to the puppy store at Market Place. They are very reputable, contrary to what everyone else thinks. We thought about buying a puppy and they asked us lots of questions about ourselves and tried to pick some dogs that would suit us (namely, me....). They were really expensive, though. We were given contact information about breeders and stuff, and we were invited to go visit them and check them out. But. Nah. So we went to the Humane Society.
Oh yes, this is going to be a good story.
So I went into Hell, I mean, the Humane Society on a positive note. I went with my mom and Tasos, both knew of my previous crappy experience with them. We went to look at the dogs and unfortunately (maybe fortunately?) they had no little dogs. I can't have a big ol' lab in my apartment, as cute as they are. They're too loud and of course, bigger dogs make bigger poos. Nough said. So I went to the front to fill out a Match a Pet application, as I was encouraged to do by a (nice!) volunteer. I asked if on the "breed" line, if I could just write "under 20 lbs". The Humane Society staff, including this freaky woman with cat toys on her head, FLIPPED OUT and they were like WE ONLY PLACE DOGS WITH GOOD FAMILIES WHO ARE WILLING TO LOVE THEM, DESPITE THEIR SIZE!!! And I'm like, well, I love all dogs.... But I'm going to keep one in my apartment and they were like WELL IF YOU WANT TO REQUEST A BREED OF A SMALL DOG, THAT'S FINE, BUT YOU CAN'T BE PICKY AND REQUEST A SMALL DOG. THAT'S NOT FAIR. So I left. You know, I really wanted to give a dog a good home. It's too bad they don't see it like that. But whatevs.
So I found out about a puppy breeder near St. Joe. We looked at some Japanese Chins they had, and they were ADORABLE. I researched them later and decided that the breed was perfect for me -- small but not too tiny, playful but generally more reserved, good companions, smart, don't like a whole lot of exercise, good for apartments, DISGUSTINGLY CUTE. Because there's a chance that Tasos and I might, you know, be together for a long time if not the rest of our lives, I wanted his input. He likes dogs but he's never really owned one. This will be a nice introduction for him into the wonderful world of pets. To make him feel special (?) I asked for his opinions on names... We eventually came up with Zoe (ZOH-ee). It's not too common but it's not unheard of, and I think it just fits her perfectly. In Greek, it means "life". I don't think any name is much more appropriate than that.
So she's adjusting very well. She loves Spike (but I don't think the affection is mutual yet.... she's got too much energy for his taste). She's SUPER smart. I love her to pieces and she's already spoiled rotten.
I need people to come visit her. I mean, everyone. If you're reading this, you are included. I want to socialize her as much as possible and introduce her to lots of types of people. If you are interested in sacrificing a few minutes of your time to come play with a cute 5 lb puppy, I would really appreciate it!!! Just call me before you come over - 714.8395. Also, when you come, please wear a hat, sunglasses, backpack... Something that makes you look "not human" but you take off once you come in the house. If you can't do that, that's totally fine, but if you remember, just bring some hat or something.
YAY!
