this week i've been in the town of Wdzydze (another excellent Polish name, although not nearly as delicious as Trzy Krzyze) teaching an English camp for little kids. last night we had a "diskoteka" and i've never seen so much frenzied dancing, not at any punk show or old Kennebunkport Community House event or boston hipster dance party. why can't kids hang onto that lack of self-consciousness, that total sense of abandon forever? i took a break from the sweaty flailing and, leaning against a wall, looked out over the roomful of kids, and i couldn't believe that most of them would ever morph into the reserved, drab and somewhat depressing species known as "adults." maybe they won't. maybe this generation is different and all these kids will grow up to be just as cool as they are now at age 6,7 and 8. i hope they do.
little kids are punk. i'm so happy i have a chance to live among them for a few days, and hope i can absorb some of their total coolness.
