Thanks to my friend A for inviting me. I attended a pretty sweet lil' Halloween gathering last night. Costumes were "optional," but of course it's more that optional...it's just fun when you do :) I spent days pondering how to come up with something better than last year's Little White Lie. I wore a plain white T-shirt, on which were inscribed phrases like "It's not you, it's me" and "The check's in the mail." I attached a Sharpee to my collar and encouraged people to add their own phrases to the shirt. Sadly, I did NOT come up with anything cleverer than that. While I was packing up for the day and evening early that morning, I conceded my lack of brilliance and grabbed my tux. You guessed it...I went as a custodian. Or a janitor, if you wanna be a dick about it.
The party was waaaaay down in Brentwood, south of Nashville. My drive home is waaaay northwest of town, towards Clarksville. A informed me that the house would not afford much room for overnight guests/hangover victims, so I was dreading having to sober up late in the evening and then drive about an hour home. It didn't take long for me to stop worrying about that.
Shortly after arriving at the house, and explaining my custodial digs to the guests (previous guesses included Waiter and Butler), I came to discover many folks currently working in the music biz, and several with reputable positions. Nashville continues to surprise me like that. I imagine that were I living in California or New York, the elitist of the elite would be almost unreachable; even to say hi, learn their name, or (let alone) hang out at a house party with them. Not so here.
The whole lot of us intermingled freely, sharing stories, speaking music and events. Eventually, the ensemble gathered in the far music room and reveled in an impromptu songwriter round that featured many and various writers and styles. For one reason, or perhaps another, the song "Djibouti" is still stuck in my head.
Many, many, many songs later, I downed my last glass of sobering water and bid a fond farewell to my new friends. It was a very good day indeed. Thanks, A!
