I'm about to waste your time if you read this...

Am I worth less because of the way I look? Not worthless, but worth less. Just because I'm over-weight, I have long hair, and I have facial hair, does that mean I'm not entitled to make as much as some one else? Every once in a while, I go to an interview where they say straight out "You're going to have to cut your hair and shave." Now I know I've ( Read more... )

alright, according to a lot of people, i've been brainwashed by the corporation, so why not put it to use here.

yes, looks do matter in business. facial hair, long hair, piercings and tattoos do matter. SOME PEOPLE aren't quite as accepting to it, children, old people whatever, it scares them.

Shorter hair is a must. The last thing people want, especially around food, is your hair in it. There are so many more chances of losing it, or atleast having it noticed because of it's length, there are many more possibilities of your hair brushing through their food without nessisarily having to have the hair fall out, it's just in the way. your hair falls into your face, what do you do? you push your hair back behind your ears, thus touching your hair and face.. thus most likely going straight back to touching their food. long hair just gets in the way, period. tied back or not. hence why chicks should have buns in the work place. guys should too if they chose to wear it long.

facial hair. it shows a sign of laziness. yes some people keep it kept up, but a lot dont, a lot of people just let their facial hair go wild for a week or so, then touch it up. or they constantly have the 5 o'clock shadow going on, it just looks bad. THEN, how many people play with their fucking goatees. They like to play with it's length and twist it in their fingers, maybe you don't, but a lot of people do. again, with food, its wrong.

And then we have the lovely piercings, the crusty, infected, mismatched rings. almost every employee who sneeks past me with a piercing in gets caught because they start playing with it. tongue rings, lip rings, eyebrow rings, they always touch it or flick it against their teeth, it's a distraction from work.

jewlery is more risky to get caught on something, more risky to hurt yourself and cost the company money, so just leave it off.

and clothing.. it's a job. everyone should look uniform, uniqueness is not part of your job, save it for your own time.

don't hate. i had dreads, have piercings, guaged ears, tattoos and am not the most professional looking person, but at work i am what they are paying me to be. and that's all that should matter.

My hair is always tied back and under my hat and tucked in my shirt. It rarely sees the light of day. My goatee... well, winter beard (yes, I have seasonal facial hair) is neatly trimmed and under an inch long. I don't like to let it grow wild. No matter what is groing on my face, I like to keep it neat. Every once in a while I get compliments from women that are 30+ on it. That bothers me a little. lol

I agree about the uniform at work thing, I understand that I'm not being paid to be unique, and I don't have a problem with that. The only piercing I have is one in my left ear, and I don't wear that to work. And I haven't got any tattoos... but a lot of the guys I work with do, mainly because they're marines n stuff.

Anyway, what I was trying to get at was, in an interview or something, I show my intelligence, and my eagerness to learn and basically tell them a lot of stuff they want to hear while still being honest. I've seen some of the people who have gotten jobs I've applied for and it amazes me what employers are willing to settle for. I do everything right, and yet they still insist on all the crap I bitched about before. Professionalism is important, but I don't think my hair choices should be a factor, as long as it is all kept neat. It just pisses me off.

Thanks for your take on things, Des. How's life?
