Am I worth less because of the way I look? Not worthless, but worth less. Just because I'm over-weight, I have long hair, and I have facial hair, does that mean I'm not entitled to make as much as some one else? Every once in a while, I go to an interview where they say straight out "You're going to have to cut your hair and shave." Now I know I've bitched about this subject many times in the past, but I just can't get over it.
Just because I look the way I want to look, does that mean society is allowed to deny me the chance to live comfortably? They seem to think so. Just because I'm not what popular society likes, they will do their best to keep me down.
Why is it people keep telling me to just give up, and give in? The people that do give up and give in are miserable! I've had enough misery, thanks. My mother tells me "cut your hair and shave, it'll grow back!" That isn't the point! I shouldn't have to get rid of it to begin with! I'm fully aware of the fact that hair grows. Long hair and facial hair does not affect my ability to work. Long hair and facial hair will not disrupt business. Long hair and facial hair does not determine my intelligence, personality, morals, or values. STOP BEING FIXATED ON APPEARANCE! Like that will ever happen...
I don't like what I look like without facial hair, and my hair is so thick, that if it's short, it sticks out everywhere. I don't like using hair spray or gel, either. So, it only makes sense to keep it long, that way it can't be all poofy.
I don't know how many of you are familiar with the band Arch Enemy, but the cover of the 2003 album
Anthems of Rebellion is a picture that pretty much describes how I feel. That one guy in a sea of millions refusing to be assimilated, that would be me at this point, surrounded by trendy civilians and military personnel. I've seen the way some of the old-timers on base look at me when I deliver their food. They look me up and down with a scowl on their faces. And just by looking at me, they know me, just like that. Isn't that amazing? It's like a super power. I wish I could know EVERYTHING about someone just by looking them up and down.
This is just... absolutely fucking ridiculous.
