Dean follows Castiel down the beach without question, the last bittersweet note of the song still echoing in his head. He can see the water dripping from the hemline of Cas’s trench coat and he knows that means something. Something bad.

But then Castiel turns and kisses him, one cool hand snaking around Dean’s neck holding him close, as he walks Dean backwards towards the sea. The first rush of water is cold enough to make Dean swear. Cas ignores him, just keeps right on tugging Dean further and further into the ocean, their lips never parting.

Fuck, Dean thinks. This is wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. But his mind is fuzzy and his dick is hard and Castiel has a hand stuffed down the front of Dean’s wet jeans. Not to mention the part where they’re standing in the middle of the goddamn ocean. These are not optimal conditions for thinking.

Dean doesn’t notice the wave rolling towards them until it’s too late. It’s powerful enough to knock him off his feet, breaking his contact with Castiel. He falls backwards into the icy cold ocean, but in the split second before his head goes under the water he looks up and sees…yep, not Cas.

It’s an ugly bastard in this light, all wild eyed and crazy haired. Dean curses himself for letting it convince him it was Cas back at the bar, fucking little merman with his stupid song and shapeshifting.

Dean tries to force his way back to the surface, but the neck is holding him down. The son of a bitch is strong. Dean fights, swinging wildly in the water, but the world is already beginning to go dark and his lungs feel like they’re on fire. He just wants to breathe again.

Out of nowhere he hears a familiar thundering and unmistakably pissed off voice.

“Briciu!” Castiel screams and the creature holding Dean down disappears with a strangled cry.

Dean pushes his way to the surface, breathing gratefully again in between bouts of coughing. Castiel wades out to meet him, and wraps a strong arm around Dean’s shoulder to keep him steady.

“How’d you know its name?” Dean sputters.

“I called in a favor,” Castiel replies darkly. Dean doesn’t ask him to elaborate.

“Well thanks for saving my ass back there. That bastard was slippery.”

Castiel nods as they step back on dry land. Dean drops to the sand and closes his eyes. This is the last time he takes a case involving sea creatures…unless someone spots Nessie in Lake Michigan. Because that would just be awesome.

He opens his eyes to find a drenched Cas staring down at him quizzically.

“Dean?”

“Yeah?”

“Why did you follow the neck? You knew I was out searching for the creature’s name.”

“You could have come back early. It’s not like you ever call first. Besides it worked it’s whammy on me, gave me the whole song and dance number.”

“Hmm..” Cas says.

“What hmmm…”

“Did you not think it was strange that I was kissing you?”

Dean groans and holds out a hand for Castiel to help him to his feet.

“Shut up, Cas.”

If he didn’t know better, Dean would swear Castiel was smirking.
