He's always driven her just to the edge of sanity.

That first day, on the train, she dismissed him, but months later she knew that she had got it completely wrong, and her shortsightedness irritated her to no end. He'd saved her life, flawlessly using the spell he had never been consciously able to master at the most opportune moment.

Then, months later, he had awed her with his ability to strategize, only to tear her heart out moments later by attempting to sacrifice himself.

Two years later, she had dismissed him as selfish and clueless, only to change her mind again when he unselfishly threw himself (on a broken leg no less) into the path of a madman.

At that point, she was forced to take a long, hard look at her perceptions and her conflicting feelings, and realize that everything she thought she felt about him had blossomed into something deeper, something frightening, even.

And yet, his utter blindness to their magnetic attraction drove her to the edge of sanity.

So many missed chances, so many stops and starts, and here they finally were, emotionally naked, afraid they were throwing themselves, together, into a losing battle, knowing that their losses had been heavy already and were only going to get worse.

Still, they hovered on the edge, afraid to take the plunge, terrified of the sheer magnitude of all they felt for each other.

Clutching the memory of his arms around her as she wept, she stood before him, pleading with her eyes. He bent down, pressing his lips to hers, and together, they finally took the plunge into the great unknown.
