........They named it Maroubra Bay High School because this high school was situated at Maroubra Bay.
When it was built, in 1959 they filled it with students.

From next door they took the boys and girls who had graduated from Maroubra Bay Primary School and they put them in Year Seven. They called that First Year. They put boys AND girls in First Year and filled the rest of the years with boys.

Jeff and I and many other boys came from a school that was closed down.
It had occupied buildings in Avoca Street Randwick, between the town hall and Randwick Girls High.
Its name had been South Sydney Boys Junior High and that can cause quite some discussion because it seems (but you might need to check this) that previously it had been Randwick Boys High until those boys had moved further down Avoca Street, to the corner of Rainbow Street.

Then there was also a South Sydney Technical (High) School and after Maroubra Bay High School closed down, apparently the remaining students ended up in South Sydney High School (no longer just technical). But don't take my word for it. I was told by an ex-Randwick Boys High School student in Art Class, last week, that that is what happened. Maroubra Bay High School existed for thirty-one years and then, just before its demise, it was _Heartbreak_ (or _Hartley_) High very briefly, as a setting for a television show, which I watched once and saw familiar corridors and parts of the playground where we spent our recess and lunch breaks.

After coming from South Sydney Boys Junior High, where we'd both started in 1957, Jeff and I spent three very pleasant years there. Not " best " but good friends. There were so many circles of friends and overlapping circles. Today we met up again. Last saw each other in December 1961. Did a bit of catching-up. Will do more at the reunion, 7th March, 2009!

It will be a different kind of party.
There won't be me, making them eat a biscuit and then whistle.
Or me stopping the dance music and making them assume various positions......but it will still be fun (to catch up).

Left: Hans and the school that was.
