Orson Scott Card on New Moon:

"And at the end, Bella actually shows some spunk. There is a memorable scene between her and werewolf boy in which she is needlessly vicious to someone who has done her nothing but good -- she wouldn't be Bella if she had a spark of human compassion or feeling for any person other than herself and her alpha-male Edward ( Read more... )

I think Twilight is just the female version of porn (and after reading the last book, maybe it creeps close to practically porn porn..). Most of the characters are annoying but yet there is the strong romance/emotional connection that girls/women crave that drips off of every page. It reels them in, you just HAVE to be a part of that connection between Edward and Bella, the story is stupid but thats just trivial. She writes what you (women anyway) want to read. "(deep manly voice) Bella I must go fight in this battle to save you!" "Oh Edward! Don't leave me! I will DIE!!" "Ok"

Its like she (the writer) gives into those selfish twinges you have. Your loved one must leave, you don't want them to but you let them go anyway because its what they have to do. Instead, Meyers just lets them stay. And then you have this bitter taste in your mouth afterwards. You a realize that that is not at all what you ultimately wanted, just what you thought you wanted at that moment. It just this big selfish mess.

Maybe thats all just me, but thats the closest I have come to explaining my love/hate relationship with these books. I could make a list from here to the sun of stupid things about the books, but it reels me in by appealing to my deep set desires for romance/emotional connection however distorted and twisted they are in the book.
