It did! I mean, the parts that drive me nuts still drive me nuts, but the plot seems to be picking up, and one part is pure awesome. I'm hoping it continues and that the sucky plot bits get resolved soon.
It's not completely implausible, since it seems to have roots in Clavell's Shogun, which was based on a historical figure. On the other hand, it's still pretty damn implausible, especially given that he's basically a ronin and bandit at best, and it's 1680-something instead of 1590-something like in Shogun, which means the new shogunate has probably settled down somewhat and social structures are probably solidifying. But yeah, it's totally "what you need is a white guy" and bad writing at that, since it shoves aside one of the show's most popular characters.
