Supernatural 4x21 - When The Levee Breaks

May 08, 2009 12:29

+ Useful post of the day: isiscolo with a simple fix to avoid seeing uncut LoudTwitter posts on your flist, and a couple of Dreamwidth tips.

+ That was one of the hardest 42 minutes of television viewing I've ever experienced. I had to pause a few minutes in to steel myself to keep watching, and it just kept getting harder. And with all the pain and anguish and despair, the single most painful moment was still, "You walk out that door, don't you ever come back."

OMG. That's still ringing in my head, so imagine it in Sam's, on repeat, can't be silenced. When John said that to him, Sam left and wasn't ever going to come back. It took him years to forgive his father for that, and even so he never forgot - he might have got past it, but it was always there, rankling. And now Dean, of all people, has said it to him.

And Dean. In his own words, he's found his line. He'll do anything for his brother, including killing him rather than letting him become a monster. And he'd probably turn the gun right around and take himself out afterwards, because no way could he live with himself after that.

But the one thing they can't do is talk rationally. Sit down and make a plan together, even though that's when they're strongest. Gah, I think that's what I want most from the finale, even more than I want answers - I want Sam and Dean to try to understand each other's point of view, or, at the very least, listen to it. In that final scene, Sam is trying to bite back his anger, visibly, trying to talk calmly, but then just comes undone when he makes Dean say what he's thinking, that Sam's a monster. They just can't get to the place where they can talk, and I'm not sure what it'll take now.

The hallucinations were almost as painful. Everyone subtly wrong: Alastair looked fit and well, whereas Mary had the gash in her stomach, hands marked with soot and dark circles under her eyes, and wee!Sam looked paler and less well as his scene went on. Oh, the twisted mess inside Sam's head.

And then there are the angels and demons with their secrets and their lies. I can't even begin to guess what's going on there.

On a purely visual note, the show was incredibly muted this week, almost sepia at times. And the camera angles really emphasised Sam's size, especially at the end when Dean calls him a monster.

So the finale seems to have been moved forward, to next week. The schedules were all saying the 21st for 2x22, but now they're saying the 14th. Good news.

Please, no spoilers for the finale preview.
