I am not ready for this to be the penultimate episode of the season. *sad face*
So, the lengths Sam will go to. He's no longer entirely rational, and in an about-face from last week and Dean's desperate desire to believe it really was his father coming to his rescue, it's Sam who wants to believe he's found the answer, that he can save Dean. Sam who's refusing to see how wrong his plan is. At one point I was actually wondering if they were going to come to blows, if Sam would try and tie Dean up and force immortality upon him, or if Dean was going to knock Sam out and drag him away to chase up Bela instead of the immortal doctor.
I was seriously scared at times in this episode. I mean, having Sam tied up and helpless and a madman about to scoop out his eyeball? I really freaked out that they might do it - I had the screen minimized and I was peaking through my fingers at that scene. Gah, Kripke, don't do stuff like that! And Dean and Sam splitting up was nerve-wracking too. Their quiet parting be careful.
Aha, the Bela backstory at last. Though I'm disappointed that this will (probably) be the last we see of her, because she's brutal and she doesn't care, and she had no qualms about killing Sam to save herself, and she just adds this whole other dimension to the show, imo. I say it's the last we'll see of her, but that's unless Dean does end up in hell, and somehow both of them get out. Hmm, I don't know a thing about the final episode, or next season (and omg, don't want to, don't tell me), but that might be an interesting route. Possibilities.
And it's Lilith who holds the contract. Nice move early on, giving us a moment of wondering if the demon was telling the truth about it being Mary (because we're still wondering what Azazel was on about with her). Interesting, too, that Lilith should use Bela to try to kill Sam, rather than going up against him herself. Is she afraid of him?
Lorne! They killed Lorne! Woe, not nice, not nice at all.
I have a minor quibble, and that's the timeline. Last week I worked out that they only had days at most until Dean's deal was due. In Ghostfacers, it was leap day, and Dean had two months to go. Even assuming that was rough, not an exact two months, that puts his deal date due at the end of April, beginning of May. And
llywela13 pointed out that the season two companion puts Sam's resurrection as being on his birthday, May 2nd. The last episode, Long Distance Call, showed the MOTW being active from the 8th to the 26th April, so that episode had to be set at the end of April, probably the 26th or 27th. But now it's over a week, 11th June by the motel receipt that Bela takes, and they still have three weeks. Writing staff, please, please, write out a timeline for yourself, one that makes sense.
On the light-hearted side, Sam talking about maggots with such glee while Dean was eating filled me with such joy. That was me and my brother as children (and since we grew up too), to a tee, from the am-I-grossing-you-out-grin, to the determinedly eating even if it was making us feel sick! I usually win that game these days - one of the advantages of working in pathology, I always have a gory tale on hand!
And Dean when Rufus asked if he'd done Bela's ear!! ♥
Dean loves zombie hunting! I want him to get out of the deal, and have a fantastic zombie hunt, him and Sam chopping them down, then knocking down beers and telling tall tales about it afterwards. ♥

Picspam. Maggot-free, in case you're eating.
Major Lorne!!!
Not seeing what's wrong, just getting the reactions, far worse than actually seeing!
I love the way this shot is framed.
All the demon's Dean's exorcised, all the ones he's sent back to hell by whatever means, all pissed off at him and waiting for him. But he's not going to let that stop him sending one more back to hell.
They're squatting again - I kind of hate thinking of them holed up in dumps like this. Even the crappy motels are better.
Random beautiful!Sam cap
Now for the fun attempted gross-out scene.
Sam is having way too much fun here.
Dean's struggling, but he's not going to let Sam get the better of him.
A huge mouthful that clearly tells Sam he didn't win.
Has Sam become much neater since those months without Dean in Mystery Spot? I thought they were both equally messy in earlier episodes, but now Sam's bed is immaculate, Dean's all rumpled. Maybe a subtle way those months changed him.
Bobby!!
Hurting each other, and I wonder if this is a sign of things to come, that they just can't agree on this.
I might have a bit of a thing for the ease with which Sam Winchesters carries girls! (Shades of that rescue scene with Lenore.)
Episode timestamp
Rewatching this (because first time round I could barely watch the screen) this really highlights Sam's sheer size.
Smart move, Dean.
