“Taemin received his familiar today.” His mother said as she continued to flip through her magazine. She took a sip from her cup, waiting to hear what Jonghyun had to say as she looked up at him. He remained quiet though. Almost like he was contemplating what he should say and how he should say it.
“Who did he receive?” Jonghyun wasn’t as surprised that someone as young as Taemin was rewarded a familiar. However, it was Taemin and it would definitely be hard to accept the fact that he was now with someone. And he would be taking responsibility for all of the things that he’d do with his familiar.
“Jin Ri. She’s a very bright girl. She has this air about her. It is such a plus to have such a beautiful and tall girl as a familiar, don’t you think? I am pretty sure that Taemin won’t have a thing to fuss about. She is almost too perfect.” His mother explains as she gets up to wash her cup out.
“That’s the problem mom; she is almost too perfect.” Jonghyun grumbles as he stands up to go clean off his dish. The problem is that Jin Ri is the perfect product of their rigid yet slightly stable society in which they live in. Jin Ri is the idolized femme-bot of the society. The idea of Sulli corrupting Taemin is what has Jonghyun contemplating if he should run to the nearest toilet and vomit.
“Jonghyun.” His mother gives a simple warning tone because she knows where this conversation is headed. She knows how Jonghyun gets when he hears that people have been rewarded with their familiar.
“Don’t Jonghyun me, mom. It isn’t right. It never will be.” He raises his voice slightly.
“This whole system is messed up. Familiar this, The Rise that-“She glares at him, signaling him to lower his voice. At night, the walls really do have ears and what is always said is always heard.
“We’ve been through this before and I know it. I know what you believe and Jonghyun, I believe it to but there is not a thing we can do about it. Not at all.” It isn’t that his mother doesn’t believe that something could change all of this. She believes that something will be able to take down The Rise, to destroy the system but until then there is nothing they can do but wait.
They’ve been waiting for a long time.

The cold and frigid wind nips at Jonghyun’s face as he trudges over to Taemin’s house through the snow. It’s plastered among the streets and many people seem to blend in, to all be the same as one as they move around in their black and grey coats. He watched the Archelaos closely and how they stood out from the rest of people within the district. Jonghyun stuffs his hands in his pockets and continues on his path. He looks up over and saw The Rise, standing tall nevertheless.
He dreams of rebellion and people going against what is now and what is obvious. Sometimes the pictures of The Rise burning and crumbling into the billions of pieces that took it to be put together seems to close but it is so very far away. Sometimes in these kaleidoscope dreams of endless possibilities, his palm is pressed tightly against the center, the core of The Rise and he finally knows its secrets. He finally knows the reasons for it all. But this is a dream. He can only hope.
As finally reaches Taemin’s door he thinks about how he is going to address him. How he is going to deal with all of this How he is going to talk Taemin out of this (even if there is nothing he can truly do about it). He hesitates but he finally knocks on the door a couple of times, waiting in silence as he watches his breath in the cold air.
When the door is answered, it isn’t someone he is expecting. However, it was someone he definitely did not want to encounter just yet.
There she is, standing tall and all that much more confident than she seemed to be just a few weeks ago when he saw her at the courtyard. She has this glow about her that you just cannot deny and it isn’t worth trying to because it was quite obvious. Her hair is pulled and sleeked back without a strand out of place. Not a trace of make up on her at all and that is what makes her all the more interesting they say. Perhaps this height complex Jonghyun has conjured over the past few years is also Jin Ri’s fault for her model-like height.
“Hello, Jonghyun. Can I help you?” It is very much sincere but that is what irks Jonghyun the must and which causes him to grunt in response. Jin Ri doesn’t falter because she knows just how much she is disliked by the older.
“I should be asking you the very same question. Why are you even here?”
“As you may have heard, but I am now Taemin’s familiar and I go everywhere he goes.” And this is true. By law, the first ten months of receiving your familiar, they are closely behind you almost every step of the way. This law was installed just so things would be much easier but in truth, nothing ever gets easier when it comes this.
“I know.” Without more being said, Jin Ri moved out of the doorway and had let Jonghyun enter. As Jonghyun navigated his way around the house, he could feel her close behind. She was almost too close for comfort and he really didn’t feel like getting into a disagreement with her. He was just too tired for that so he ignored his gut and continued on towards Taemin’s room.
“Hyung…what are you doing here?” He heard the younger boy’s voice down the hallway. He turned to see pure panic amongst Taemin’s face. Jonghyun didn’t answer him, he just continued on and he grabbed Taemin by the wrist. He could hear his faint protests by the hunger as he tossed him into his room. As Jonghyun was about to shut the door, he turned around and was met with Jin Ri who looked like she was about to say something but he cut her off with slamming the door in her face.
“When were you going to tell?” He seethed.
“I was going to tell you today. They only gave me her today. I didn’t know this was going to happen.” Taemin tried to defend himself. Before someone was rewarded their familiar, they were told beforehand. However, Taemin wasn’t told much at all. He wasn’t even notified about receiving Jin Ri.
“My mother told me.” Jonghyun finally sat down on Taemin’s bed. “Your mom probably told her, you know how they are.”
“Jonghyun, why are you here? I don’t need the added stress.” He really didn’t. It was rare for people to receive their familiars in high school but it did happen and Taemin had to balance school and Jin Ri. Jonghyun just looked at him for a while, trying to figure out how he should phrase this question and if he should even ask it in the first place.
“Just ask it.”
“…Does Minho know?” And that was what Taemin feared the most. He didn’t want to believe that Minho probably knew about this but there was a possibility that he did know considering the fact that all morning Taemin had been sending texts to him and none of them received a reply.
Taemin shakes his head violently.
No.
Jonghyun spends what seems like hours trying to console Taemin about all of this but there isn’t much you can say to make someone feel better about it. Sometimes people are happy about receiving someone and other times they aren’t. When it is time to go, he doesn’t want to and he refuses to budge but after a few minutes of being coaxed by the younger, he left reluctantly. As he gathered his things and left Taemin’s room, he was greeted by Jin Ri. A face he really didn’t care to see at the moment. That night he left with regrets and uncertainty in his heart. As he exited the house, he took one look at the blue door and he wondered if things would be like this forever.
He wonders what he has to do, what has to be done for change to happen as he steps into the blurring whiteness.

Jonghyun decides to take the long way home. He knows he shouldn’t because the districts curfew is at 9:30 and it takes him much longer to get to his destination, his home. He wants to enjoy what it feels like to be free (if that is possible). So he carefully listens to the crunching of the snow under his boots. He sees the flashing lights of neon signs amongst the streets on different sides being turned off. It’s only 8:30 but the businesses are not going to take their chance with the Archelaos.
The Archelaos was the military or the troops that were ordered to patrol the areas around this time. They had only been picked specifically and against their will. For as long as he can remember, Jonghyun remembers seeing the Archelaos out and about patrolling the areas. He thought they were beyond swell when he was younger. Their outfits were black as night and embedded with the emblem on the side of the arm. The emblem was off a griffon and the colors that outlined it were silver upon the deadly black that they Archelaos wore. They stood tall and fearless and they honestly were merciless.
There were many stories that Jonghyun heard about how the Archelaos were given orders to eliminate those that opposed The Rise and the Sahae, which was their government. Many stories depicted these ruthless soldiers painting the streets crimson with the blood of those that were on the list. The list contained many that had tried to go against everything that Sahae and The Rise stood for but they weren’t having any of that.
And they lived up to what they stood for.
Jonghyun remembers very little but just enough. He remembers the cacophony of screams coming from the living room as he hid under the floorboards of his house. He remembers hearing his mother begging in English, begging with everything in her for them to let her husband stay, to let his father be free. He doesn’t hear his father protest but he gives reassuring words. He gives promises that cause just as much ruckus than before.
He remembers his fingernails digging into his palms and he remembers his silent pleas and wishes that things would be okay but he knows the truth. He just doesn’t want to face it.
Jonghyun’s father was part of one of the unions that stood against the Sahae and The Rise. He was more subtle about though and not as radical. That was all Jonghyun knew though. His father had never discussed any of the information with the family and his mother made sure that her husband didn’t do so.
But his father wasn’t one to speak much anyways.
Jonghyun had regretted not bringing his gloves like his mother had pestered him about wearing. As darkness seemed to consume everything, he felt that things just weren’t as they should be. But he knew that living the way that they did, the way that the Sahae controlled everything was just ridiculous from the beginning. But as much as he wanted to do something there was nothing he could really do. Not by himself at least.
As Jonghyun continued to walk, he saw that one of the signs on the right side of the street wasn’t off. Curiosity got the best of him and he wondered who would risk keeping their lights on at this time. He should have been worried himself because who out of their right mind would stay out this late.
Jonghyun continued onwards to the light. It was a purplish blue that was strikingly beautiful. It reminded him of the bracelet his father gave to his mother. His thoughts were cut as he heard other footsteps crunching throw the snow. Trying to not panic, he rushed towards the alley where the light was peeking from and he didn’t hesitate to open the door. The thought of getting caught never crossed his mind but he would have to be more careful now.
He knew he wouldn’t be able to make it home that night and he didn’t bring his phone with him because he had told his mother that he would go to Taemin’s be back later that night. He hoped that his mother wouldn’t freak out and have him looked for. That was something he didn’t want and he didn’t need with what all was going on.
As Jonghyun turned around and examined the room, he noticed the bright colors. The room looked straight out of a dream. It was exotic and colorful. Many colors he had never seen before or even heard of. There were a lot of foreign objects that were placed about the room. It was as if the world, all of its cultures were in this single room and all these cultures coming together was a beautiful sight.
He carefully made his way around the room tracing many of the artifacts lightly, memorizing the patterns. He was somewhat in a daze and yet he was excited all at once. Things he had seen, things that had existed that he never knew existed. Things that he never imagined.
A couple of years ago the Sahae had cut off all ties with the rest of the world.
“Don’t touch things you can’t be sure you and pay for if you break it, kid.” The voice startles him and he does indeed knock a vase over. He scrambles to catch it just in the nick of time before it shatters. Jonghyun looks up to see a woman. She looks older than him but not by much. She has this interesting attire on and he doesn’t know the name of it either but he knows that she looks beautiful in it and he cannot find the right words to put together.
“You know it is past the curfew and you could have been caught. You’re a fool, aren’t you? You’re one of those rebels.” She continues on as she makes her way to seat herself in the wicker chair that is behind a small table that has intricate carvings on the side.
“Sit.” She beckons him to come as she waves him over her way. He takes a seat in the chair across from her.
“What is this place?” He asks as he continues to look around. When he looks back at her, he sees a grin on her face.
“Well, you tell me. You stumbled upon here.” He doesn’t say anything, he just stares for a while and before he can say something, she begins to talk.
“Jonghyun, is it? Give me your palm.” Her hand is stretched out over the wooden table and she waits for him.
“How do you know my name?” He counters back.
“How do you not know my name?” She smiles at him. Something about her smile has him agreeing with that statement as silly and illogical as it sounds. He doesn’t know why but he feels compelled and eerily enough, drawn to this woman but not romantically. Almost as if she holds these secrets of something important, something big that he needs to know about. So Jonghyun goes along with it. He pushes up the sleeve on his jacket and pushes up his sweater, placing his hand in hers.
“You know this is illegal, right?” They both know it is illegal. Many things had been outlawed when the Sahae took control. Such things as religious practices and any other beliefs that seemed questionable and a threat to The Rise and the Sahae. Palmistry was never really big in the beginning but there was still a few places that kind of pushed it and once the Sahae was resident, things like that, that seemed for fun and what they thought as a threat was cut off, was gotten rid of.
She ignored his question and she sized up Jonghyun’s palm. She traced all the lines on his hand until she got to his heart line. His heart line is short. She looks back up at him to examine his face.
“You shouldn’t have left your cellphone home but you can use mine because you need to stay the night until the level of the Archelaos clear down.” She looks back as his head and she continues on, looking deeply and thinking hard. “Your father, I knew him. I didn’t think you’d be his son though.” And this is what brings Jonghyun back to reality. This is what makes him think that all this silly stuff isn’t as silly as it may be.
“You knew him?” He is on the edge of his seat, waiting for her to speak and he knows he will hang on her every word. The woman just looks at him and then she looks back at his hand, tracing the rest of his lines. He wants to repeat himself but from the short amount of time of being here, he feels he knows how this woman operates. She will answer you with things before she answers your original questions.
“Have you met him?” Met who? She can’t possibly be talking about my father. Jonghyun thinks.
“Who?” She frowns at this. She was sure that he would have met him at this point but he hasn’t now. It sort of messes things up she thinks but she will make it happen in a way or maybe she should let them do it.
“You will meet him soon enough.” She simply states as she retracts her hand from his. “Boa is the name. Make yourself at home for tonight. You have to get up early to make it back home.”
∞: I feel like this is the first time I have posted something that I was proud of in a while. I may not be able to update it every weekend but I will definitely keep it up.
Things to know:
Jin Ri: Sulli's birth name for those who do not know.
Familiars - they are woman or men who are rewarded to someone. the sahae chooses and picks who everyone is supposed to be with. sometimes they are only with that person for a limited time.
The Rise - the wall that sounds the country that keeps everything out. A part of the Sahae.
Sahae - literally translates into "dead sea". it is the current government.
Archelaos - they are the soldiers that are from sahae. it means "ruler of the people".
Even though Palmistry seems to have a small part here, it plays a much bigger role in things once everything gets going.
