Food for Thought

So, I've been lately thinking about our favorite boys in 1965-1974 (pre-Roche case)...  this was the nostalgic point in the graphic novel, when Dan was fit/handsome and Rorschach was sane/articulate. And a lot of interesting questions came to mind ...I'm curious as to what you guys think.

1. When Nite Owl and Rorschach team up-- why would they team ( Read more... )

There was a wiki(possibly pedia) article on the mating habits of barn owls, and a line stuck out: that barn owls will often bring gifts to their intended partner. Dan made Ror's grappling hook - I like to think that perhaps it was Walter's first present from anyone. They might have teamed up after that.

This is gold! I wonder what Rorschach's reaction would be if he knew such knowledge.

I can't be too articulate since I've been wondering a lot about these things myself, but I guess the least I can do is to offer some suggestions ( ... )

1. I think that happens because one them has his ass saved by the other. XD Nite Owl who probably make the proposition, arguing about how easier will be to fight crime with some help.

2. Hmm, I guess Rorschach (even before knows about those details of Daniel's life) already be aware of his abilities and his sense of justice, so I don't think he will judge him by that. I believe he thinks even Daniel having money, he's not like the other richer guys.

3. I can't see Rorschach letting Dan knowing about his mother issues, not at all. Dan, for the other hand, probably talked a lot about his father's disappointment. But I don't think this can make a "bond". It's so Freudian. XD

4. Because something like that. :) Rorschach's reaction will be something like "I can't accept it", but since Dan is a pathological stubborn... :)

1. This kind of boggled me too actually. I don't know myself if that came out as a voluntary move or somehow Captain Metropolis (or someone) assigned the teams to patrol together. Daniel being the kind-hearted guy that he is would probably introduce himself to Rorschach and show kindness/respect and most likely the only one in the Watchmen group to have the initiative to do so. And if that were the case Daniel would've gained Rorschach's 'trust' in that thus the partnership ( ... )

They were working together as partners before Captain Metropolis tried to assemble a team, so it was something they decided to do without outside influence.

Thanks for the correction; thus it makes their partnership all the more profound.

1. I'd like to think they were working in the same area and both had the same idea of working together. However, it would've been Dan who approached Rorschach about it.

2. I don't think Rorschach would be envious. In fact, I suspect he'd say some really nasty things about Dan getting an education from an institution filled with "liberal scum." Though that wouldn't deter him from appreciating Dan as a partner.

3. I would be surprised if Rorschach ever reveled anything about his childhood. I think Dan said a few things here and there but realized it made Rorschach uncomfortable to talk about, so as a mutual silent agreement that didn't come again.

4. I think the grappling gun was something Dan just wanted to give to Rorschach. I can see Rorschach wanting to initially deny the gift but whatever he had inside of him that allowed him to connect with Dan appreciated it.
