the universe giveth, and the universe taketh away...

for christmas, thebroomecloset's sister and her family gave me a collection of palm toys - including a palm bluetooth wireless headset. the flashing blue light, combined with its size, made it look somewhat painfully like a borg attachment...

but i threw fashion to the winds, because it was just so damn convenient. mostly for use in airports - not having to dig my phone out of my purse / carryon bag / pocket when i'm in the security line / juggling bags and food / boarding a plane was excellent! - but also for talking while folding laundry, driving the car, straightening up the house... plus it charged off the same adapter as my treo itself, plugged directly into the headset, so i could drop both the phone and headset onto my new sync and charge cable at night and be all ready to go in the morning.

and then, one day, it wasn't there anymore. :( i looked everywhere for it. tossed my office (a daunting task), searched my car, checked around the rest of the house, pulled everything out of my laptop bag... no love. i could have sworn i remembered bringing it home from my most recent trip, but i travel so much that i'm lucky if i remember where i park my car each go-around, and i figured i was just remembering a previous trip. so i concluded that some lucky flier was going to encounter it in the seat-back pocket of an airplane, and wrote it off.

i spent a couple months relearning how inconvenient it is to try to hold a phone up to my head or keep a wired headset from getting wrapped around everything in its vicinity... and then palmone announced they were coming out with a new headset. it got a good advance review on treonauts, so i figured i'd wait until it came out and call it an upgrade...

about a month ago, i finally broke down and ordered a palm ultralight wireless headset to replace my lost one. it has some downsides - shorter talk time, and it requires a small charging pocket rather than plugging directly into the power adapter - but it's smaller, lighter, clearer, less borg-looking, and seems to have a longer working range, too.

thebroomecloset had originally thought he'd get one for himself, but the ear tips don't fit him well, so he was still looking for a good solution. apparently the universe decided to end his search. :)

i got back from a trip to DC yesterday thinking that i had misplaced my bag of palm toys - including my bluetooth gps. :( again, with the searching - office, house, laptop bag, car... and this time i used the little flashlight i keep in the car to check under the seats, instead of just shoving my arm under and swiping around. no palm bag - but, lo and behold, i found my original headset! the earhook had somehow gotten caught on the metal armature, so it was suspended under the seat, which is probably why i didn't find it on the first search...

thebroomecloset just paired it with his treo and is happily exploring its goodness. pack rat that i am, i still have the original manual, so it's like christmas in september!

(oh, and the bag of palm toys? still in my carryon. wish they would hurry up and invent google house.)

now if only the same thing would happen with my glasses...

treo, geek, toys, happiness
